Malawi India Rice News: El Nino drought Malawi 2026- India sent 1000 metric tons of rice to Malawi

Lilongwe: The fire of war is raging in many parts of the world. India has sent 1000 metric tons of rice to the people of Malawi, a drought-affected country in Africa. This humanitarian aid has been dispatched from Nhava Sheva Port of Mumbai. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a social media post that this aid has been sent to help the food security of the people of Malawi suffering from drought caused by El Nino.

He said that this step shows the spirit of India’s partnership and cooperation with the countries of the Global South.

Where is the country Malawi?

Malawi is a small landlocked country located in Southern Africa. It is surrounded by Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique. The country is also known for its Lake Malawi, which is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Africa. Malawi’s economy is mainly dependent on agriculture.

A large population of the country is associated with agriculture. But in the last few years, due to continuously changing weather and drought, farming here has been heavily affected.

Why was there a terrible drought in Malawi?

Malawi is currently in the grip of severe drought. The biggest reason behind this is believed to be the El Nino weather system. Due to El Nino, the rainfall pattern in many African countries gets disturbed and there is no rain for a long time. Persistent drought conditions may persist in many areas between 2025 and 2026.

In many districts there was no rain at all for 7 to 10 days, due to which crops were ruined. The situation became so bad that the government had to declare a state of disaster in many parts of the country.

According to reports, crop production in the country has been severely affected and millions of people are facing food crisis. Livestock has also been affected in many areas and the problem of drinking water has increased.
