Judiciary to get new leadership: Justice Surya Kant to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India

The Central Government has formally initiated the process for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). The current CJI, Justice B.R. Gavai, is set to retire on November 23rd. Traditionally, the process for appointing a new CJI begins approximately one month in advance. In order of seniority, Justice Surya Kant is set to become the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Childhood and Education: A Journey That Began in Hisar

Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana. He received his early education in Hisar.He graduated from Government PG College, Hisar, in 1981 and earned his LLB degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.

His continued pursuit of knowledge can be gauged from the fact that he continued his studies even while serving in the judicial service and completed his Master of Laws (M.L.L.) from Kurukshetra University in 2011 with a First Class First Rank.

Journey from Law to Judiciary

He began his career in 1984 at the Hisar District Court.A year later, in 1985, he transferred to Chandigarh and began practicing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He specialized in constitutional, civil, and service matters and served as a legal advisor to several universities, boards, and banks.

Recognizing his legal prowess and impartiality, he was appointed Advocate General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His reputation in the legal field soon solidified, and he became a judge in 2004. He subsequently served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Justice Surya Kant’s clear thinking, impartial approach to justice, and profound legal understanding have elevated him to the highest court of the country.His decisions have always been based on social justice and the fundamental spirit of the Constitution.

When Justice Surya Kant takes oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on November 24, 2025, a new chapter will begin in the judiciary. Many expectations are pinned on him regarding judicial reforms, transparency, and timely delivery of justice. His experience and perspective will play a crucial role in infusing new energy and confidence into the Indian judicial system.
