Todd Lyons, the acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has announced that he will resign from his position at the end of May 2026. His departure comes at a critical time for U.S. immigration enforcement, as policies and practices remain under intense political and public scrutiny.

The announcement was confirmed by Markwayne Mullin, who stated that Lyons will officially leave office on May 31. Mullin acknowledged Lyons’ service, highlighting his role in leading one of the country’s most debated federal agencies during a period of major policy shifts.

Lyons assumed leadership of ICE in early 2025 and quickly became a key figure in executing the immigration strategy of Donald Trump. His tenure was marked by a significant expansion of enforcement efforts, including increased arrests, broader operational reach, and the growth of detention infrastructure supported by federal funding.

At the same time, these actions placed ICE at the center of controversy. Enforcement drives in several U.S. cities triggered protests and raised concerns about the agency’s methods. Public opinion surveys during this period reflected declining trust in the agency, with many questioning the balance between security measures and civil liberties.

Supporters of Lyons, including senior policy advisor Stephen Miller, credited him with strengthening national safety and maintaining firm control over immigration enforcement. Critics, however, argued that some of the policies introduced under his leadership went too far and required stronger oversight.

In explaining his decision to step down, Lyons pointed to personal priorities, saying he intends to spend more time with his family. He described his time leading ICE as an honor but emphasized the importance of being present during key moments in his children’s lives.

His resignation also comes amid broader changes within the Department of Homeland Security, following recent leadership transitions. These developments have raised questions about whether the agency may adjust its tone or strategy moving forward, even as it continues to enforce existing immigration laws.

Another point of debate during Lyons’ tenure involved expanded enforcement authority for ICE officers, which drew legal challenges and criticism from lawmakers. These issues are expected to remain central as policymakers continue discussions around immigration reform.

With no successor yet announced, Lyons’ exit creates uncertainty about the future leadership of ICE. The incoming director will face the challenge of managing a well-funded but highly scrutinized agency, while navigating ongoing political divisions over immigration in the United States.
