Zohran Mamdani : History was made on Wednesday in New York’s vibrant streets and diverse neighborhoods—when 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the city’s first Indian-American and Muslim mayor. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialist Party, is known for his progressive views and grassroots campaigning.

Zohran is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani. His victory proved that politics based on grassroots issues can still resonate with voters—no matter how powerful the opposition.

Despite attacks from the pro-Trump camp and the corporate media, Mamdani made the problems of ordinary New Yorkers—rising rents, the housing crisis, and inflation—the centerpiece of his campaign.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, and after spending a few years in South Africa, Zohran’s family moved to New York when he was seven years old. After completing his studies in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College in Maine, he returned to Queens and worked as a housing consultant. There, he saw the true story of families struggling with eviction and economic inequality—and this is where his political thinking began.

In 2020, he made headlines by defeating a four-time incumbent in Queens’ 36th Assembly District. This victory was not only personal but also historic—he became the first South Asian and the first Ugandan-born person to serve in the New York State Assembly.

Now, in 2025, Mamdani has set his sights on City Hall and launched a campaign in which “equality” becomes not just a slogan but a policy. He promised free bus service, affordable subway travel, permanent relief for tenants, the establishment of a public housing agency, and city-run grocery stores.

His policies and simple language struck a chord with voters. Perhaps this is why, despite all the opposition and criticism, Zohran Mamdani is today the new leader of the city that always welcomes new stories and new dreams.
