Tragedy at Denver Airport

A harrowing incident unfolded at Denver International Airport late Friday night when a Frontier Airlines flight struck and killed an individual on the runway during its takeoff roll. The collision triggered an engine fire, forcing an emergency evacuation of more than 230 people on board.

Chilling Cockpit Audio and Incident Details

Audio recordings from Air Traffic Control (ATC) have captured the high-stakes moments immediately following the impact. The pilot of Frontier Flight 4345 can be heard reporting the emergency with urgency: “Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebodyโ€ฆ we have an engine fire.”

Shortly after, airport personnel confirmed the gravity of the situation to controllers, reporting that human remains were discovered on the runway. The aircraft, an Airbus A321neo, was traveling at approximately 139 mph when the person was struck.

Major Security Breach: Intruder Scaled Fence

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the incident on social media, describing the individual as a “trespasser” who bypassed airport security. According to Duffy, the individual deliberately scaled a perimeter fence and ran onto the active runway.

“No one should EVER trespass on an airport,” Duffy emphasized, highlighting the severe danger such breaches pose to aviation safety.

Evacuation and Passenger Safety

The flight, bound for Los Angeles, was carrying 224 passengers and 7 crew members. Following the impact and subsequent engine fire, smoke was reported in the cabin. The flight crew aborted the takeoff and initiated an emergency evacuation using the aircraft’s inflatable slides as a precaution.

  • Injuries: 12 passengers reported minor injuries during the evacuation.
  • Hospitalizations: 5 individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
  • Recovery: The majority of the passengers were eventually transported back to the terminal and placed on a different flight to complete their journey.

Ongoing Investigation

Frontier Airlines issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the event and confirming full cooperation with safety authorities. Currently, Runway 17L remains closed as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conduct a comprehensive investigation alongside local law enforcement.

Initial inspections by airport authorities found no punctures in the perimeter fence, supporting the theory that the individual climbed over the barrier to gain access to the restricted airfield.
