Shillong MP Ricky Andrew J. Singkon collapsed while playing futsal and died of cardiac arrest.

Ricky Andrew J. Singkon, Lok Sabha MP from Shillong constituency in Meghalaya and a senior leader of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), died suddenly on Thursday evening. The 54-year-old MP was playing futsal with friends when he suddenly collapsed on the field. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him.

Health Deteriorated During the Game

According to reports, Singkon was playing a friendly match in Shillong’s Mawlai Mawiong area on Thursday evening. He suddenly collapsed on the court mid-game and fell unconscious. Onlookers immediately rushed him to the Mawiong Community Health Center. After receiving first aid, he was referred to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital due to his critical condition.

According to hospital sources, he was declared dead at around 8:45 p.m. Doctors initially determined cardiac arrest as the cause of death.

Historic victory in 2024

Ricky Singkon won a remarkable victory from the Shillong seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He defeated senior Congress leader Vincent Pala by a wide margin, entering Parliament for the first time. His victory was seen as a significant turning point in state politics.

Singkon was not only an active politician but also a member of the educational field. As a professor, he contributed extensively to the education sector. He was popular among the people due to his simple nature and active engagement on grassroots issues.

Wave of Mourning in the State

The news of the MP’s sudden demise has cast a pall of gloom over Meghalaya. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed deep condolences, saying that Singkon was a dedicated public representative who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. His passing is being described as an irreparable loss to the state.
