India’s young opener Sai Sudharsan had a disappointing start to his Test career, getting dismissed for a duck on debut on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. He was caught down the leg side off Ben Stokes, with keeper Jamie Smith taking a sharp catch.
India had chosen to bat first and got off to a promising start, thanks to a solid 91-run opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (42*) and KL Rahul (42). However, England bounced back just before lunch, first dismissing Rahul and then removing Sudharsan for zero. India went to lunch at 92/2.
This was the first time in seven years that an Indian player got out for a duck on Test debut. Despite his strong performances in the IPL, Sudharsan couldn’t handle the pressure of Test cricket. The early failure has led to criticism about his selection.
