Purnima Devi Barman Wins 2026 Wayfinder Award

Renowned Assam wildlife biologist Purnima Devi Barman has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious 2026 Wayfinder Award. Presented by the National Geographic Society and Kia this global honour recognises her outstanding efforts to protect the endangered Greater Adjutant Stork. In Assam this bird is widely known as the Hargila.
Barman earned international acclaim for establishing the Hargila Army. This grassroots initiative mobilised over 20,000 women to safeguard nesting habitats and promote environmental education. The movement also provides sustainable livelihood opportunities through traditional weaving programs that feature stork motifs.
Her journey began two decades ago when she realised the misunderstood birds were losing their nesting trees. Instead of relying solely on scientific research she engaged village communities to change public perception and build pride around the species. Today Assam hosts the largest breeding colony of these storks in the world. The local population of the bird has soared past 1800 individuals under her leadership.
The 2026 Wayfinder Award celebrates visionaries who develop innovative solutions and address environmental challenges. Barman dedicated this monumental milestone to the memory of her late father. Her success proves that true conservation flourishes when local communities step up to lead the way.
