On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the Bharatiya Janata Party organized a program in Karauli to honor democracy activists who were jailed during the 1975 Emergency. The event was held on Wednesday and also marked the death anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Premchand Bairwa was the chief guest, joined by Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar, BJP spokesperson Saurav Saraswat, and other key leaders.
Five democracy fighters—Suresh Chandra Gupta, Kailash Chandra Sharma, Udho Singh Advocate, Kesar Singh Naruka, and Kailash Chandra Sharma (Hindaun)—were felicitated with shawls and garlands.
Deputy CM Bairwa described the Emergency as the “darkest chapter of Indian democracy,” highlighting how civil liberties were crushed and press freedom was suspended.
He paid tribute to Dr. Mookerjee, calling him a fearless thinker and symbol of nationalist ideology who laid down his life for the nation.
The event emphasized that the Emergency is a reminder that democracy must be protected by vigilant citizens. Several BJP leaders including Dhirendra Bainsla, Gajendra Singh Jadon, Ramesh Meena, Indu Jatav, and Rajkumari Jatav were present.
