Fuel costs for American motorists have surged to their highest levels in nearly four years as the ongoing conflict in Iran and strategic blockades in the Strait of Hormuz continue to throttle global energy flows. On Tuesday, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline hit $4.51, a milestone not seen since July 2022.

The Economic Impact of the Iran Conflict

According to data from GasBuddy, the national average has climbed by a staggering $1.54 per gallon since the onset of the war in Iran on February 28. Experts warn that without a definitive peace deal, the upward trajectory is likely to continue.

Patrick DeHaan, head petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, noted that market pressures are intensifying:

  • Low Inventories: US gasoline stocks are currently at multi-year seasonal lows.
  • Rapid Increases: National average prices have risen by 21 cents per gallon since last Thursday alone.

Military Intervention: ‘Project Freedom’

In response to the maritime bottleneck, US Central Command launched “Project Freedom” last Sunday. The initiative aims to provide safe passage for commercial vessels following President Donald Trumpโ€™s order to blockade Iranian ports in early April.

However, the situation on the water remains volatile. Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reported during a Tuesday briefing that despite a nominal ceasefire:

  • Iranian forces have fired upon commercial vessels nine times in the last month.
  • Two large container ships have been seized by Iranian military units.
  • US forces stationed in the region have faced ten separate attacks.

The Defense Department’s Stance

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the United States is seeking to restore order rather than escalate the conflict. “Let innocent ships pass freely,” Hegseth stated during the briefing. “Weโ€™re not looking for a fight, but Iran cannot be allowed to block international waterways.”

Global Market Figures

The bottleneck has sent ripples through the global commodities market, keeping crude prices at elevated levels:

  • Brent Crude: $108.11 per barrel
  • WTI Crude Oil: $100.69 per barrel
