Constitutional Values Violated in Rajgarh: Barber Refuses Service to Dalit Youth Over Caste Identity; Bhim Army Demands Arrest.

RAJGARH (MADHYA PRADESH): In a distressing incident that highlights the persistence of deep-seated caste prejudices in rural India, a youth from the Valmiki community was allegedly denied service at a hair salon in Banskhada village, under the Khujner police station limits of Rajgarh district.
The Incident: A Denial of Dignity
The victim, identified as Vishal Valmiki, claimed that he visited a local salon for a haircut and waited for over an hour. According to Vishal, despite his presence, the barber continued to provide services to others who arrived long after him.
When Vishal requested his turn, the barber allegedly refused point-blank, stating that he does not provide services to members of the “Bhangi” (a derogatory caste-based slur) community. The victim further alleged that he was not only insulted with casteist remarks but also threatened with dire consequences when he protested the discrimination.

Political and Social Outcry
The incident has triggered a sharp reaction from social activists and political leaders. Sunil Astay, a prominent leader of the Bhim Army, took to social media to condemn the act, calling it a “failure of the state administration.”
Astay stated:
“Even today, haircuts in villages are determined by one’s caste. The use of derogatory slurs and death threats against the Valmiki community in Banskhada is a highly condemnable and anti-constitutional act. If the Dalit community is still being humiliated based on their identity, it reflects the failure of the government.”
The Bhim Army leader confirmed that he has spoken with Vishal and his family, assuring them of full support. He warned that if the police do not take immediate and strict action against the accused, a large-scale democratic protest will be organized.

Legal Implications and Call for Action
Under Article 17 of the Indian Constitution, untouchability is abolished, and its practice in any form is forbidden. Furthermore, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act strictly prohibits the denial of public services and the use of caste-based slurs.
The local community and activists are now demanding that the Rajgarh district administration and the Madhya Pradesh Police register an FIR under relevant sections to ensure that justice is served and a strong message of social equality is sent across the region.
