New Delhi | June 23, 2025:
By-election results for five assembly seats across four Indian states — Gujarat, Punjab, Kerala, and West Bengal — were announced today. The voting took place on June 19. The outcomes mark a political win for multiple parties and carry regional significance.
Gujarat
- Kadi seat: BJP candidate Rajendrakumar (Rajubhai) Chavda defeated Congress’s Ramesh Chavda by 39,452 votes.
- Visavadar seat: AAP’s Gopal Italia won with a margin of 17,554 votes, defeating BJP’s Kirit Patel.
Kerala
- Nilambur seat: Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukkath defeated CPI(M)’s M. Swaraj by 11,077 votes. The seat was previously held by the LDF-backed independent PV Anvar, who resigned earlier this year.
Punjab
- Ludhiana West seat: AAP’s Sanjeev Arora secured victory, defeating Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Arora is expected to resign from the Rajya Sabha, vacating a seat that sparked speculation about Arvind Kejriwal’s possible entry. However, Kejriwal denied plans to enter Parliament at a press conference.
West Bengal
- Kaliaganj seat: TMC’s Alifaa Ahmed, daughter of late MLA Naseeruddin Ahmed, won by defeating BJP’s Ashish Ghosh. The seat had fallen vacant after the former MLA’s death in February 2025.
Explosion During Vote Counting in Bengal
While vote counting was underway in Kaliaganj, an explosion in Barachandgarh (Krishnanagar) killed a 9-year-old girl. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee expressed condolences and assured legal action against those responsible.
