Assam, 15-11-2025 : In a significant step towards empowering women at the grassroots level, the Assam government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has distributed the first instalment of ₹10,000 each to 32,860 Self-Help Group (SHG) women under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) in Dhemaji’s Sissiborgaon Legislative Assembly Constituency. This initiative aims to bolster women’s entrepreneurship and financial independence in the state.
The program primarily targets women in rural areas with 31,556 out of the total beneficiaries residing there while 1,304 beneficiaries are from urban areas. The seed capital of ₹10,000 provided to each woman is intended to kickstart their business ventures and help them become ‘lakhpati’ entrepreneurs contributing to Assam’s economic growth.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the scheme’s vision of creating a robust financial foundation for these women. When the women members of an SHG collectively deposit their instalments they create a capital pool that significantly strengthens their business potential. So far, over 37 assembly constituencies have benefited from this scheme.
The government plans a phased approach to financial support, where women who effectively utilize the initial seed capital of ₹10,000 will become eligible for further loans and grants totaling ₹37,500 in subsequent years. The MMUA scheme is part of Assam’s broader commitment to women’s empowerment and rural development projected to reach around 40 lakh women SHG members statewide.
During the distribution event, CM Sarma also called for maintaining a balanced family size to ensure better care and education for future generations linking social welfare with economic upliftment. The Assam government’s efforts under this scheme mark a transformative chapter in promoting entrepreneurship among women fostering financial inclusion, and strengthening local economies across the state.
This drive reinforces Assam’s standing as a model for women’s empowerment and inclusive growth in India.
