Assam Demands Geographic Equity in NITI Aayog Funding

The Assam government has formally urged the Centre to adopt the principle of geographic equity in public investments for the Northeastern region. During an interactive meeting between NITI Aayog officials and regional leadership, state representatives highlighted that the growth of landlocked states must be evaluated beyond just expenditure efficiency.

Officials emphasized that Assam faces heavy structural and logistical disadvantages compared to coastal states. While coastal regions benefit from maritime ports and shorter supply chains, the Northeast remains heavily dependent on a narrow transport corridor. This critical geographic limitation leads to significantly higher infrastructure development costs and inflated freight expenses across the area.

To overcome these natural barriers, the state administration argued that public investment must be strategically distributed to counterbalance regional isolation. Prioritizing geographic equity will serve as a vital mechanism to ensure highly competitive national integration and drive future economic growth.

The government further reiterated that as India moves toward long term developmental goals, national progress should be measured not only across population demographics but also across complex terrains. Ensuring robust financial and infrastructural support will help transform the Northeast into a vibrant gateway economy capable of bridging India with wider Asian markets.
