New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing violence in Iran, an aircraft is ready to bring back Indians stranded in Tehran. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed its full commitment to facilitating the safe return of all Indian citizens who wish to return to India, given the rapidly changing situation and escalating tensions in Iran.

Indian citizens asked to keep their documents ready

The Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian citizens residing in Iran to keep all their necessary documents, such as passports, visas, ID proofs, and other important papers, ready. They have also been urged to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy or Consulate in Iran and to inform them immediately in case of any emergency. The MEA clarified that the situation is being constantly monitored and special flights or other arrangements will be made if necessary.

How many Indians are in Iran?

Currently, official figures on the number of Indian citizens in Iran have not been released, but it is estimated that thousands of Indian students, workers, businesspeople, and others are present there for various reasons. This step comes at a time when nationwide protests are taking place in Iran, leading to increased international concerns. Iran recently closed its airspace for a few hours, affecting several flights, including an Air India Delhi-New York flight which had to turn back.

Keep checking for updates

The Ministry of External Affairs has appealed to Indian citizens to keep checking for updates on the Indian Embassy’s website and social media handles in Iran. They have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to contact the embassy immediately in case of any unusual situation. The MEA stated,

ā€œThe Government of India gives the highest priority to the safety and well-being of its citizens. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are prepared to take necessary steps.ā€

This statement comes at a time when several countries, including the US, have advised their citizens to leave Iran, and air travel disruptions are increasing due to regional tensions. Indian citizens are being advised to remain vigilant and to obtain information only from official sources.
