According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), pre-monsoon activities are set to dominate most parts of the country today, May 5, 2026. While North and Central India can expect a dip in temperatures due to dust storms and scattered rainfall, heavy downpours are likely to persist across the Northeastern states.
North India: Thunderstorms and Squalls
Weather patterns across Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to shift today. Influenced by a Western Disturbance, these regions will see partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–60 km/h.
- Temperature: Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to hover between 32°C and 38°C, providing much-needed relief from the recent heatwave.
- Rajasthan: Intense heat will persist in Western Rajasthan, though localized dust storms remain a possibility in some pockets.
East and Northeast India: Heavy Rainfall Alert
A ‘Yellow’ and ‘Orange’ alert has been issued for Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and the sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal. Thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall are expected, which may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
- Kolkata: The city will remain humid with chances of light rain by evening. Temperatures are predicted to stay between 32°C and 36°C.
South India: Pleasant Conditions Amidst Humidity
- Bengaluru: The Karnataka capital will enjoy pleasant weather with light drizzles and a maximum temperature of 33°C.
- Chennai and Hyderabad: High humidity and heat will prevail in coastal areas. Chennai could see temperatures rising to 38°C, making for a sweltering afternoon.
West India and the Himalayan Region
- Mumbai: Cloud cover is expected with chances of light showers. Humidity levels will remain high.
- Himalayan States: Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to experience snowfall in high-altitude reaches and hailstorms with rain in the lower valleys. Travelers are advised to exercise caution on mountain roads.
Overall Outlook for May 2026
In its monthly bulletin, the IMD has predicted that India will receive above-normal rainfall (110%+) in May 2026. This active pre-monsoon phase is expected to mitigate the frequency of heatwaves across several states.
