Udaipur: Caste-Based Attack on Dalit Bride’s Wedding Procession; BSP Warns of Mass Protest

Udaipur. A disturbing incident of caste-based violence has surfaced from the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, threatening social harmony in the region. On the night of April 29, a Dalit family’s wedding celebration in Hariyav village, under the jurisdiction of the Dabok Police Station, was violently disrupted by anti-social elements fueled by prejudice.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, the Bindoli (wedding procession) of Pooja Meghwal, daughter of local resident Bhairulal Meghwal, was passing through the main village road at approximately 10:00 PM. During the festivities, a group of dominant-caste individuals blocked the path. Witnesses state that the attackers used casteist slurs and ordered the procession to halt immediately.
The situation escalated quickly as the attackers forcibly pulled the bride off her horse and shut down the music system (DJ). Armed with sticks, iron rods, and swords, the mob began pelting stones at the wedding party. Several people, including women, sustained injuries; Manju Meghwal suffered a severe head injury. Other victims identified include Vardichand, Ganesh, Jitu, and Laxmibai. The victims further alleged that women were molested during the chaos, and their jewelry, including mangalsutras, was snatched.
BSP Delegation Demands Justice
Following the incident, a high-level delegation from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) visited the grieving family to offer support. Acting on the directions of State In-charge Advocate Jagdish Chandra Pal, a team including Udaipur Zone In-charge CP Khatiq and former MLA candidate Advocate Suresh Kumar Meghwal met with the victims and local police.
The BSP leadership has issued a stern ultimatum to the administration: if the perpetrators are not arrested immediately and prosecuted under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the party will launch a large-scale state-wide agitation. District President Shiv Kumar Gautam, Hoshyar Singh Jatav, and other party workers were present to demand swift legal action.
Current Situation
While the village remains in a state of uneasy calm, additional police forces have been deployed to prevent further escalation. Authorities are currently investigating the matter and are reportedly using CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to identify and apprehend the suspects.
