JAIPUR: Amidst growing public concern regarding fuel supplies, the Food and Civil Supplies Department of Rajasthan has issued a clear clarification: there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the state. The department has urged citizens to maintain calm, avoid panic buying, and refrain from paying heed to unverified rumors.
Understanding the Surge in Demand
Explaining the current situation, Mr. Ambrish Kumar, Secretary of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, noted that there is a price difference between fuel outlets. Diesel at public sector oil company outlets is priced at approximately ₹94 per liter, while it is around ₹97 per liter at private sector (Nayara) outlets. This price disparity has led to a noticeable increase in consumer demand at public sector petrol pumps. Furthermore, with institutional diesel prices hovering around ₹160 per liter, several industrial and bulk consumers have turned to retail petrol pumps, creating temporary pressure at certain locations.
Data from Oil Companies: A Significant Spike in Sales
The state has witnessed an unprecedented rise in fuel consumption compared to the previous year:
- Indian Oil: Petrol sales have risen by 28%, and diesel sales by 43%.
- BPCL: Petrol sales increased by 24%, with diesel sales seeing a surge of over 30%.
- HPCL: Petrol sales rose by 13.7%, and diesel sales by 16.8%.
Despite this growth, which is significantly higher than in many other states, oil marketing companies have reassured the public that the supply chain remains robust and sufficient stock is available to meet all retail requirements.
Government Appeal: Maintain Normal Buying Patterns
Secretary Ambrish Kumar stated that the department is closely monitoring the situation. He appealed to the public to purchase fuel only as per their daily requirements. There is no need for unnecessary stockpiling, as regular supplies are being ensured across every district in the state.
The administration emphasized that panic buying only creates artificial crowds at pumps, causing inconvenience to fellow citizens. The government’s primary objective remains prioritizing the needs of retail consumers and ensuring the uninterrupted availability of fuel throughout Rajasthan.
