ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Suspended Over Sexual Misconduct Claims: What Lies Ahead

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) executive bureau has officially suspended Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan following an intense 18-month investigation into sexual misconduct allegations involving a female staff member.

The Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties the court’s governing framework announced the suspension after a United Nations oversight report highlighted a factual basis for “serious misconduct.” The allegations involve claims of non consensual sexual contact during official missions and at his private residence.

The unprecedented move has triggered a major procedural gridlock at The Hague. Khan’s legal team has fiercely rejected the bureau’s decision, calling it “unlawful, procedural unfair and completely unsupported by evidence.” They argue that the executive bureau is politically overstepping a unanimous conclusion from an independent panel of three judges, who had previously found the UN’s findings inconclusive.

The ultimate fate of the high profile British barrister known globally for seeking arrest warrants against top international leaders now rests on a high stakes global vote. The ICC will convene a special session of all 125 member states as soon as possible. Overturning his suspension or permanently removing him from office will require a secret ballot majority, meaning at least 63 nations must vote to oust him.
