Morena Dalit Atrocity

A shocking incident of caste-based violence has emerged from the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, sparking widespread outrage. A 40-year-old Dalit e-rickshaw driver was allegedly abducted by a group of influential locals, brutally assaulted, and paraded half-naked through a village wearing a garland of shoes. The police have registered a formal case and initiated a crackdown on the accused.

Abduction from the Highway and Inhuman Treatment

The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the victim, a resident of Jatawar village (identified as Mohanlal, name changed), was returning home after dropping off passengers. According to the victim’s statement, as he reached the Sikroda Canal near National Highway-44, his path was blocked by a tractor-trolley carrying nearly two dozen men.

The victim alleged that the menโ€”identified as Dilip Gurjar, Bhura Gurjar, and Surendra Gurjarโ€”dragged him out of his e-rickshaw and beat him with sticks and rods. He was then forcibly taken to Janakpur village, where he was stripped, forced to wear a garland of shoes, and paraded through the streets to humiliate him.

The Motive: Legal Pressure or Fare Dispute?

There are two conflicting narratives regarding the cause of this brutal assault:

  1. The Victimโ€™s Version: The laborer claims that he had filed an FIR against the accused following a dispute during Diwali last year. He alleges that the accused were constantly pressuring him to withdraw the case and agree to a compromise. When he refused, they orchestrated this attack to intimidate and silence him.
  2. Police Preliminary Findings: Civil Line Police Station In-charge Udaybhan Singh Yadav stated that preliminary inquiries suggest the conflict might have started over an e-rickshaw fare. According to this version, a heated argument broke out when the laborer demanded payment from the passengers, leading to the assault. However, the police are actively investigating the “prior enmity” angle as well.

Police Action and Political Outcry

Acting on information provided by passengers who witnessed the abduction, the Civil Line Police reached the spot and rescued the laborer from the captivity of the accused. A case has been registered against five named individuals: Bhura Gurjar, Surendra Gurjar, Mahendra Gurjar, Dilip Gurjar, and Karua Gurjar.

While one accused has been arrested and sent to jail, a manhunt is underway to nab the remaining four.

The incident has triggered a political storm. Leaders and activists from the Bhim Army, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Azad Samaj Party gathered at the Civil Line Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest of all involved. They have warned the administration of a large-scale protest if justice is not served swiftly and impartially.

Conclusion

This incident has once again raised serious concerns regarding law and order and the safety of marginalized communities in the Chambal region. While the police assure a fair investigation, Dalit rights organizations remain on high alert, seeking stringent action against those who take the law into their own hands.
