The Assam government has formally urged the Centre to adopt the principle of geographic equity in public investments for the Northeastern region. During an interactive meeting between NITI Aayog officials and regional leadership, state representatives highlighted that the growth of landlocked states must be evaluated beyond just expenditure efficiency.

Officials emphasized that Assam faces heavy structural and logistical disadvantages compared to coastal states. While coastal regions benefit from maritime ports and shorter supply chains, the Northeast remains heavily dependent on a narrow transport corridor. This critical geographic limitation leads to significantly higher infrastructure development costs and inflated freight expenses across the area.

To overcome these natural barriers, the state administration argued that public investment must be strategically distributed to counterbalance regional isolation. Prioritizing geographic equity will serve as a vital mechanism to ensure highly competitive national integration and drive future economic growth.

The government further reiterated that as India moves toward long term developmental goals, national progress should be measured not only across population demographics but also across complex terrains. Ensuring robust financial and infrastructural support will help transform the Northeast into a vibrant gateway economy capable of bridging India with wider Asian markets.

Security forces in Upper Assam have launched an aggressive crackdown on local crime rings and illegal operations. In a major breakthrough, Sivasagar police successfully busted an alleged arms trafficking network. A coordinated operation led to the arrest of four individuals suspected of smuggling weapons across the region. Law enforcement authorities recovered incriminating materials from their possession and are currently investigating their broader operational links.

Simultaneously, a high profile extortion attempt was thwarted in Dibrugarh district. Duliajan police detained two local youth leaders belonging to the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad. The accused, identified as Ranjit Bora and Prahlad Gogoi, allegedly tried to extort a substantial amount of money from a private contracting firm engaged by Oil India Limited. Following a formal complaint from the contractor, police acted swiftly to arrest the duo. Both individuals are undergoing intense interrogation as investigators trace whether they are linked to other oil sector extortion rackets in the region.

Local authorities emphasized that these back to back operations reflect a zero tolerance policy toward extortion and illegal arms distribution. Security measures have been heavily tightened around essential oil infrastructure and vulnerable public spaces across Upper Assam to ensure safety and prevent further criminal interference.

This video reports on a related major crime crackdown in Assam where police successfully busted an illegal operation and arrested four individuals.

The All Assam Students Union has launched intense protests following a violent clash in the Arya Nagar area of Guwahati. Members of the student group gathered to demand immediate justice and a transparent investigation into the incident. The protestors heavily questioned the silence of local legislator MLA Gupta regarding the matter.

Guwahati Police have issued a clear statement to control the situation. According to senior police officials the entire incident was rooted in a financial extortion case. Officials clarified that it was not an ethnic dispute. The police alleged that the accused individuals deliberately tried to exploit Assamese sentiments to evade legal accountability and escape arrest.

The student organization continues to press for a complete probe to reveal the absolute truth. AASU leaders stated that public safety in the city cannot be compromised. They added that any elements trying to create communal division must face strict action.

Security has been tightened around Arya Nagar to maintain peace and prevent further tension. The police administration has urged citizens to stay away from unverified social media rumors.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially assigned sixteen guardian ministers to oversee thirty five districts across Assam today. This strategic administrative deployment comes right before the arrival of the challenging monsoon season. The state government aims to ensure seamless administrative oversight and robust disaster preparedness through this proactive initiative.

The primary objective of this move is to guarantee immediate relief and effective management during the upcoming flood season. Each guardian minister will directly monitor the infrastructure readiness of their designated districts. They are tasked with ensuring that local relief camps are fully equipped with food and clean drinking water and medical supplies.

The decentralized approach is expected to significantly reduce response times during emergency situations. By having a state minister stationed or focused closely on specific districts the local administration can secure quicker approvals for critical operations and financial resources. High risk flood areas will receive extra attention under this newly distributed oversight framework.

Local citizens and community leaders have welcomed this early administrative intervention. Past experiences have shown that synchronized efforts between state ministers and district collectors lead to much better outcomes on the ground. The ministers are scheduled to hold immediate high level review meetings with district disaster management authorities to assess embankment strengths and rescue boat availability.

With the monsoon clouds gathering over the region this timely allocation of responsibilities reflects the top priority the government places on public safety. The coming weeks will test the efficiency of this system as the ministers begin their field visits to vulnerable locations. Residents hope that these structured safety measures will minimize property damage and protect lives during the peak river swelling periods.

A big political event happened in Assam today. A team from the Criminal Investigation Department or CID carried out a sudden raid at the home of MLA Ramakanta Dewri in Morigaon. This surprise action has created a lot of buzz and concern in local political circles.

Early this morning several CID officials reached the MLA’s house in Morigaon. Security personnel first secured the whole area. Then the investigation team searched the property thoroughly. Authorities have not shared many details about the raid yet. But early reports suggest this is part of a larger and high profile inquiry.

After the news spread many supporters of MLA Ramakanta Dewri gathered outside his house. Local police reached the spot quickly to control the situation and prevent any trouble. The atmosphere is tense but peaceful right now. People are waiting for an official statement from the CID to understand what is happening.

Political experts say this CID raid in Morigaon could affect the current political mood in Assam. Taking such a strong step against a sitting MLA shows that law enforcement agencies are acting firmly on pending legal matters. It sends a clear message that no one is above the law.

As the day goes on more information is likely to come out about why the raid was conducted and what evidence the officials may have found. Many news channels and websites are keeping a close watch on Morigaon. Residents and political observers are eager to see how MLA Ramakanta Dewri responds to this unexpected action by the authorities.

GUWAHATI: In a landmark legislative move, the Assam Legislative Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, making Assam the first state in Northeast India and the third in the country following Uttarakhand and Gujarat to enact such a law. The legislation establishes a common civil framework for all residents regardless of religion, replacing community specific personal laws governing marriage, divorce, succession and live in relationships.

A central provision of the newly passed bill is the strict prohibition of polygamy and bigamy, violations of which will now attract up to seven years of imprisonment. The law also standardizes the legal marriageable age at 21 for men and 18 for women. In a major step toward regulating modern partnerships, the legislation mandates the registration of live in relationships within one month. Failure to declare a live in relationship can lead to a three month jail term or a fine of up to ₹10,000. Crucially, the bill protects vulnerable individuals by ensuring children born out of such unions are legally recognized as legitimate and allows deserted partners to claim financial maintenance through the courts.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the bill’s passage as a historic milestone for gender equality and social justice. He clarified that the state’s Scheduled Tribes have been explicitly kept outside the bill’s purview to protect their customary practices and traditions.

To further safeguard legal rights and prevent fraud, the UCC makes the statewide registration of all marriages and divorces compulsory within 60 days. It also introduces uniform, gender-equal inheritance rules. While Opposition legislators protested the bill and demanded it be sent to a select committee for wider scrutiny, it was ultimately passed by a voice vote.

GUWAHATI: In a bold roadmap for the state’s economic future, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced an ambitious target to reduce the state’s Below Poverty Line (BPL) population to less than 3% over the next five years.

Speaking at a state development convention, the Chief Minister emphasized that sustainable poverty alleviation cannot rely on welfare doles alone. Instead, it requires a structural shift toward aggressive job creation, decentralized industrialization and massive infrastructure development.

“Our goal is not just temporary relief, but total economic self reliance for every household in Assam,” Sarma stated. He highlighted that the upcoming blueprint relies heavily on transforming rural economies by expanding self help groups, boosting micro entrepreneurship and accelerating mega-infrastructure projects that double as high volume employment generators.

While flagship welfare schemes like Orunodoi will continue to provide a crucial financial safety net for the most vulnerable, the state administration plans to pivot heavily toward skill development. By aggressively aligning the local youth workforce with incoming private investments particularly in technology, logistics and the manufacturing sectors the government aims to lift hundreds of thousands of families permanently into the middle class.

Economic analysts note that while bringing the BPL numbers down to under 3% is an incredibly steep mountain to climb, Assam’s recent fiscal momentum and aggressive infrastructure push provide a solid foundation. If executed successfully, this socio-economic overhaul could position Assam as a primary engine of growth and one of the frontrunners in economic transition across Northeast India.

Mosques and open Eidgahs in Guwahati, Barpeta, Silchar, and other towns witnessed large, joyful gatherings for early morning Eid prayers. Religious leaders and various Eidgah committees utilized the sacred occasion to emphasize peace, brotherhood and civic duty. In strict alignment with recent state government guidelines, community leaders ensured that all Qurbani rituals were conducted out of public view in designated private spaces, with a strong focus on hygiene and municipal sanitation.

“This year’s observance is a true testament to the spirit of unity in Assam,” stated a representative from the Burha Jame Masjid in Guwahati. “We appealed to the community to prioritize cleanliness and respect for all faiths, and the collective response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Local civil administrations deployed adequate security and traffic management personnel to ensure smooth movement around prayer grounds, though the atmosphere remained entirely peaceful and celebratory throughout the day. Across the state, residents exchanged traditional greetings, shared festive meals with neighbors of diverse backgrounds and distributed portions of the sacrificial meat to the underprivileged.

The orderly and joyous conclusion of the festivities reflects a highly successful collaborative effort between local Islamic committees and district authorities, further strengthening Assam’s long-standing tradition of multicultural coexistence.

Frustrated by years of empty promises, dozens of displaced families in Kordoiguri village staged a fierce protest on the banks of the Brahmaputra River today, demanding immediate and permanent anti-erosion measures.

For many protestors, this is not their first crisis. A significant number of families are currently facing their third displacement in less than a decade. As the swift currents of the Brahmaputra continue to swallow agricultural land and homesteads, villagers took to the embankments with placards, chanting slogans against the Water Resources Department.

“We have lost our homes, our fields, and our livelihoods to the river,” said Lila Bora, a local resident whose family was forced to dismantle their bamboo hut just last week. “Every year, the authorities come with temporary geo bags, but the first heavy rain washes them away. We don’t want temporary relief anymore, we want a permanent solution before the entire village disappears from the map.”

Majuli, the world’s largest river island, has shrunk drastically over the last century due to severe bank erosion. Despite multiple central and state government projects aimed at protecting the island, grassroots communities say the interventions lack long term viability.

Local youth groups and village elders have threatened to intensify their agitation and boycott upcoming local body activities if the administration fails to deploy heavy geo textile tubes and concrete porcupines along the highly vulnerable Kordoiguri stretch before the monsoon peak hits.
