In a landmark initiative aimed at elevating the Indian handloom industry onto the global stage and weaving together the distinct cultural heritages of two distant geographical regions, a major textile fusion project has been set in motion. Rajasthan’s world-renowned traditional ‘Kota Doria’ fabric will soon be combined with Northeast India’s unique ‘Eri Silk’ to engineer a brand-new, premium sustainable fabric.
To map out the executive framework of this ambitious project, a high-level delegation led by Mr. Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), along with leading fashion designers and master weavers, met with Lok Sabha Speaker Mr. Om Birla at the camp office in Kota on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Driving Prime Minister’s ‘5F Vision’ Forward: Speaker Om Birla
Commending the strategic textile collaboration during the session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted the cultural and economic value of the initiative:
Official Statement of the Lok Sabha Speaker: “Kota Doria is not merely a piece of fabric; it represents the living cultural identity of the Hadoti region and the intergenerational craftsmanship of our local weavers. Merging the feather-light texture of Kota Doria with the rich durability of the Northeast’s pride, Eri Silk, will carve out a distinct global niche for two of India’s finest handloom traditions. This innovation directly drives Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘5F Vision’ (Farm to Fibre, Fibre to Fabric, Fabric to Fashion, Fashion to Foreign) on the ground, opening up prosperous employment avenues for local artisans.”
Field Inspections in Kaithoon and Preparations for an Official MoU
To evaluate the operational scalability of the project, DoNER Secretary Sanjay Jaju visited the Common Facility Center (CFC) in Kaithoon, Kota, to assess ground-level production capacities. He was accompanied by Kota District Collector Piyush Samariya and Mara Kocho, a senior representative from the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC).
The administrative delegation closely observed the intricate ‘Khat’ (square-checkered) weaving technique unique to Kaithoon’s master weavers, analyzing the technical compatibility of blending coarse, eco-friendly Eri Silk yarns with fine Kota Doria threads.
Core Objectives of the Upcoming Institutional Framework:
- Impending MoU Signing: To formalize the operational guidelines of the project, a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will soon be executed between the central NEHHDC and the District Industries Center (DIC) under the Government of Rajasthan.
- Joint Design Labs and Skill Upgradation: The bilateral agreement mandates comprehensive training modules for weavers across both regions, the creation of modern blended design catalogs, and international marketing placement for the finished premium lines.
- Distinct Fabric Attributes: The proposed textile fusion will yield a unique fabric that retains the thermal-insulating, strong, and cruelty-free qualities of Eri Silk, while maintaining the signature transparency and light weight of Kota Doria.
During the consultation, local fashion designers from Kota also presented commercial design layouts and product-diversification strategies to the administrative team to maximize the market viability of the upcoming hybrid fabric.
