Vande Ganga Water Campaign

Jaipur | May 17, 2026

In a decisive move to combat depleting groundwater levels and fortify long-term water security for future generations, the Government of Rajasthan has rolled out a comprehensive environmental action plan. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma finalized the structural blueprint of the ‘Vande Ganga Water Conservation Public Campaign’ during a high-level administrative review at the Chief Minister’s Residence on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

The Chief Minister issued strict directives ensuring that the campaign must transcend conventional bureaucratic limits or departmental routines. Instead, it must be localized across every village, leveraging active community participation to transform the initiative into a powerful, citizen-led public movement.

A Cascade of Initiatives from Ganga Dashami to World Environment Day

This statewide ecological campaign is scheduled to run for 12 days, commencing on May 25, 2026 (Ganga Dashami) and concluding on June 5, 2026 (World Environment Day). The specialized timeline will feature a series of strategic and social programs executed from urban municipal corporations down to remote gram panchayats:

  • Restoration of Heritage Water Resources: Intense desiltation and cleanup drives will be executed across the state’s historical stepwells (Baoris), community wells, and traditional village ponds to restore their original water-retention capacities.
  • Water Rituals and Perimeter Afforestation: Bridging cultural values with ecological conservation, the campaign will begin with traditional community reverence ceremonies at local water bodies. Concurrently, extensive tree plantation drives will be conducted along the banks (Pals) and catchments of these reservoirs to stabilize local aquifers.
  • The Message of ‘Plant Trees—Save Lives’: The Chief Minister directed that this slogan be widely popularized as the core message of the campaign to spark widespread public consciousness regarding environmental preservation.

Urban Water Management: Mandatory Push for Rainwater Harvesting

Emphasizing the absolute necessity of groundwater recharge, Chief Minister Sharma instructed urban development authorities to strictly enforce and expand Rainwater Harvesting Systems across modern residential sectors, commercial complexes, and government buildings. This targeted mandate aims to capture maximum monsoon runoffs, directing surface water back into the water table rather than allowing it to go to waste through urban drainage.

Additionally, the high-level committee reviewed digital progress presentations on ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari 2.0’ and the ‘Karmabhoomi Se Matrabhoomi’ campaign. The Chief Minister ordered absolute inter-departmental synergy among the Public Works Department (PWD), Panchayati Raj, Department of Forest, and the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) to guarantee smooth execution.

The strategic review session was attended by Chief Secretary V. Srinivas, along with Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and senior administrative directors from all allied portfolios.
