Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi will start in the upcoming international friendly against Zambia, to be played at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires. The match holds special significance as it will be Argentina’s final home friendly before they begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup, where they will defend their title.

Messi, who recently came off the bench during Argentina’s win over Mauritania, is expected to play a bigger role this time. Scaloni explained that the Zambia fixture is an opportunity to test the team in more competitive conditions and ensure that key players get the right match rhythm.

Although Messi has not publicly confirmed whether he will play in the 2026 World Cup, Scaloni made it clear that the legendary forward remains a central part of his plans. Messi was heavily involved throughout the qualification campaign, and the coaching staff is optimistic that the captain will lead the squad once again on football’s biggest stage.

Scaloni shared that the friendly will also feature several senior players who form the backbone of the national team. He has already submitted a preliminary list of 55 players for the World Cup, with the final 26-member squad expected to be announced closer to the tournament.

According to Scaloni, the main focus is ensuring that the team enjoys their journey and enters the World Cup with unity and confidence. He added that if this turns out to be Messi’s last World Cup, he wants the football icon to cherish the experience to the fullest.
