Jaipur: Following the strict directives of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma to completely dismantle the illegal liquor network in the state, the Rajasthan Excise Department has executed a highly successful month-long enforcement drive. The special preventive campaign, which ran from May 1 to May 31, 2026, was carried out under the direct leadership of Excise Commissioner Mr. Namit Mehta.

The state-wide crackdown resulted in the seizure of illicit liquor worth crores of rupees, the destruction of illegal local distilleries, and massive arrests. During this intensive drive, the department registered 2,046 cases and arrested 922 smugglers involved in the illegal trade.

Statistical Overview: Massive Haul of Liquor and Vehicles Confiscated

The comprehensive data of illegal liquor seized and raw materials destroyed by the Excise Preventive Force across various districts is detailed below:

Type of Liquor / Material

Quantity Seized (in Liters)

Estimated Market Value (in INR)

Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL)

39,219 Liters

₹3,93,06,809

Beer

19,806 Liters

₹44,40,000

Country Liquor

7,182 Liters

₹19,41,242

Illicit/Handcrafted Liquor (Hathkad)

13,443 Liters

Locally Brewed

Spirit

30 Liters

–

Surgical Strike on Manufacturing Units: In a major blow to the liquor mafia, enforcement teams raided brewing manufacturing units on the ground and destroyed a record 5,62,984 liters of ‘wash’ (the raw base material used to brew country liquor) along with several illicit distillation furnaces.

94 Vehicles Seized in the Supply Chain Net

To effectively choke the distribution networks on highways and local routes, the department confiscated a total of 94 vehicles used for smuggling:

Heavy Vehicles (Trucks/Containers): 15

Light Four-Wheelers (Cars/Jeeps): 13

Three-Wheelers (Auto-rickshaws): 1

Two-Wheelers (Motorcycles/Scooters): 65

Major Highway Seizures: Multi-Lakh Interceptions Detailed

During the campaign, the excise department intercepted several large truck containers smuggling non-duty paid liquor from neighboring states across major expressways and national highways:

Hanumangarh (₹90 Lakh): A massive consignment of IMFL meant ‘for sale in Punjab only’ was intercepted in a truck on the Bharatmala Expressway.

Kota (₹1.3 Crore): In two separate operations near the New Gopalpura Toll Plaza on National Highway 52, officials seized illicit liquor worth ₹60 lakh and ₹70 lakh respectively from two trucks.

Barmer/Balotra (₹62 Lakh): A truck carrying illegal liquor worth ₹62 lakh was seized during a blockade on the Amritsar-Jamnagar Bharatmala Expressway.

Jodhpur/Osian (₹58 Lakh): A joint operation by the Jodhpur and Pali excise teams led to the seizure of an illegal liquor truck valued at ₹58 lakh on the Bharatmala Expressway.

Dausa (₹50 Lakh): During a highway blockade on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, a truck carrying Punjab-marked IMFL worth ₹50 lakh was intercepted.

Udaipur/Kherwara (₹35 Lakh): A truck container packed with Chandigarh-marked liquor worth ₹35 lakh was seized near the Khandi Obri Toll Plaza.

Additionally, a significant consignment of illicit liquor was recovered from a mini-truck in Jalore district.

Strengthened Intelligence and Inter-Departmental Coordination

Excise Commissioner Mr. Namit Mehta personally monitored the daily progress of the campaign via video conferencing. To maximize the impact, the department fortified its local informant network and worked in close coordination with the local police and the Government Railway Police (GRP). This synchronized strategy successfully crippled major inter-state smuggling rings operating within Rajasthan.

Hindaun City | May 18, 2026

Public dissatisfaction has intensified in Hindaun City, Karauli district, over the geographical positioning of a local licensed liquor vendor. Siting the retail outlet in close proximity to the statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar at the Hindaun Jatav Basti tax post sparked widespread anger among local residents and members of the Jatav community on Monday, May 18, 2026. Given the sensitivity of the issue, a large delegation of youth and community leaders, led by Hariom Thekedar—President of the Jatav Social Reform Committee for the 360-village cluster spanning Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, and Dausa—submitted a formal administrative memorandum addressed to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Hindaun, demanding the immediate relocation of the shop away from the residential zone.

The formal representation was personally delivered to the Tehsildar of Hindaun, the trainee Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Shreshtha Dixit, and senior officials of the regional Excise Department.

Violations of Operational Hours and Rising Threats to Social Safety

In the official memorandum submitted to the administration, citizens alleged severe violations of statutory excise bylaws, stating:

Key Allegations in the Memorandum: “The liquor vendor in question is operating illicitly from approximately 5:00 AM until late at night at 11:00 PM, flagrantly violating prescribed legal timelines. Conducting such commercial activities right next to a revered statue of Dr. Ambedkar and within a densely populated residential cluster has severely degraded the local social environment. As a direct consequence, local women, school-going children, and daily commuters are facing constant mental discomfort and physical safety concerns.”

Committee executives and local community representatives issued a stern ultimatum to the administrative machinery, declaring that if the liquor shop’s location is not shifted to an appropriate area out of respect for public and cultural sentiments within the next 24 hours, local women and citizens will be forced to launch an aggressive street protest, for which the administration will bear sole responsibility.

Prior Roadblocks and Strategic Administrative Mediation

It is noteworthy that public anger over this sensitive issue had previously boiled over, leading local women to stage a massive four-hour demonstration that completely paralyzed traffic on the main thoroughfare. Upon receiving reports that the law-and-order situation was deteriorating, Committee President Hariom Thekedar, who was en route to Delhi via the Mumbai Expressway, reversed his journey mid-way to return to the spot. Alongside administrative officials, he successfully pacified the protestors by assuring them of swift legal recourse, which led to the clearance of the roadblock.

During the submission of the memorandum on Monday, an excise inspector, personnel from multiple police stations, and the Hindaun Tehsildar remained on high alert at the scene to maintain public order. The citizen delegation included several prominent youth figures, including Gaurav, Rajat, Mukesh, and Virendra, who reiterated their demand for immediate administrative action aligned with public sentiment.

Jaipur/Jodhpur | May 14, 2026

The Rajasthan Excise Department has launched a massive state-wide enforcement campaign against the illegal manufacture, storage, transportation, and sale of liquor. Under the direct supervision of Excise Commissioner Namit Mehta, the department is following a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy, conducting intensive roadblocks, raids, and patrols. In the first 13 days of May alone, authorities have seized illicit liquor worth crores and made hundreds of arrests.

Major Breakthrough in Jodhpur: Truck Carrying Chandigarh-Only Spirits Seized

The most significant success of the campaign occurred on Wednesday night in Osian, Jodhpur. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team from the Jodhpur and Pali Excise departments set up a blockade on the Bharatmala Expressway. During the operation, they intercepted a 12-wheeled truck.

Upon inspection, officials recovered 675 cartons of various premium English liquor brands. All Zonal Additional Commissioners, District Excise Officers, and Inspectors have been instructed to maintain constant vigilance and conduct high-frequency patrolling in sensitive areas.

Conclusion
