New Delhi: The Southwest Monsoon is advancing rapidly across India, bringing major shifts in weather patterns. On June 25, 2026, severe weather activities including thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds are expected to persist across the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high alert for 17 states, predicting heavy downpours and wind speeds ranging from 50 to 85 km/h.

While Northern India anticipates a much-needed respite from the scorching heatwave, the western coast, central regions, and northeastern states are bracing for torrential rains. Authorities have issued ‘Yellow’ and ‘Orange’ alerts across multiple zones, urging citizens to remain cautious of potential waterlogging, lightning strikes, and landslides.

Here is the detailed weather forecast for various regions across India for June 25, 2026:

North India: Relief from Heat, Hailstorm Alert for Hills

Residents of Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and adjoining areas are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall. This will drop the maximum temperature to around 35-40°C, offering significant relief from the intense heatwave.

Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan will experience partly cloudy skies with scattered light rain or dust storms. Meanwhile, a severe alert for heavy rain and hailstorms has been issued for the hilly terrains of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, raising the risk of landslides in the upper reaches.

Central India & West Coast: Heavy Downpour in Maharashtra

The monsoon is now fully active over Central India. States including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra (specifically the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions) are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Mumbai and the broader western coast will continue to face intense showers, which may lead to severe waterlogging in low-lying urban areas. The temperature in this belt will hover between 30-35°C, though residents will continue to feel the humid heat.

East & Northeast India: Flood-Like Situations Imminent

A ‘very heavy rain’ warning is in effect for Northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, alongside Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. This intense spell is expected to continue uninterrupted until June 25.

Additionally, moderate to heavy rainfall paired with thunderstorms will affect Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal. While temperatures will drop (28-34°C), the continuous downpour runs the risk of swelling river water levels and triggering flood-like situations in vulnerable areas.

South India: Active Monsoon on Coastal Belts

Southern states continue to witness a vigorous monsoon. Heavy rainfall is forecast for the coastal stretches of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Inland regions like Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh will experience thunderstorms and scattered showers.

Chennai and its neighboring areas will see partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain, keeping the maximum temperature around 34-37°C. However, noticeable humidity will persist in certain pockets.

Conclusion and Safety Advisory

With widespread weather alerts in place, the IMD has strongly advised farmers, daily commuters, and tourists to stay vigilant. People in mountainous areas should be wary of landslides, while coastal and urban residents must prepare for sudden waterlogging and avoid venturing out during lightning storms.

New Delhi | May 18, 2026

According to the latest meteorological bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Indian subcontinent is experiencing a striking atmospheric division on Monday, May 18, 2026. While the vast plains of Northern, Central, and Western India remain locked under a punishing, severe heatwave wave, cyclonic pre-monsoon systems are triggering intense thunderstorms and heavy downpours across the southern peninsula and northeastern states. Weather scientists have sounded red and orange alerts across multiple northern states, warning citizens to take extreme precautions during peak daylight hours.

Detailed Weather Forecast for Major Metros and Regions

The localized distribution of temperatures, moisture levels, and wind patterns across the country is structured as follows:

Delhi-NCR and the Northern Plains: The National Capital Region, alongside the agricultural belts of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, faces extreme solar radiation. Maximum temperatures are projected to hit record peaks between 45°C and 47°C, while overnight minimums will hover uncomfortably between 32°C and 35°C. High-velocity, scorching surface winds (locally known as Loo) will significantly disrupt outdoor public life.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat: This tri-state belt remains the absolute hotspot of the country. Desert zones and central manufacturing districts are recording consistent daytime values between 42°C and 46°C. Regional administrations have activated emergency heatwave response protocols to mitigate the risk of heatstrokes.

Mumbai and the Western Coast: The financial capital Mumbai and the Konkan coast face a combination of high heat and oppressive humidity. Daily temperatures will range from a maximum of 33°C to 35°C to a minimum of 26°C to 28°C. While heavy coastal moisture will make the air feel thick and sticky, partial cloud cover and localized, transient light drizzles remain highly probable.

Chennai and Southern India: The pre-monsoon system over the peninsular shelf is operating at peak capacity. Chennai is slated to record a maximum of 36°C to 38°C and a minimum of 27°C to 29°C. Convective cloud developments are expected to bring heavy thunderstorms, lightning, and intense squalls across parts of Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka, Kerala, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Bengaluru City: The tech hub of Bengaluru continues to enjoy a microclimate that is remarkably pleasant compared to other major metros. The city expects a maximum of 31°C to 33°C and a cool minimum of 21°C to 23°C. Scattered light to moderate evening showers will help maintain comfortable ambient temperatures.

Kolkata and Eastern/Northeastern India: Kolkata will see a mix of muggy weather and partial cloud layers, with temperatures ranging between 35°C and 37°C. Further east, the IMD has issued severe warnings for the northeastern states—including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland—bracing for torrential rainfall and gale-force winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h.

Primary Atmospheric Catalysts and the Progression of the Monsoon

Climate experts state that the Indian atmosphere is currently shaped by three interacting weather mechanisms. First, dry, continental westerly winds from the northwestern landmass are driving up surface temperatures over the plains. Second, moisture feeds from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are fueling localized cloud generation across southern territories.

The most encouraging developmental update confirms that the Southwest Monsoon currents are tracking smoothly along their historical trajectory. The IMD anticipates that the primary monsoon front will make landfall over the Kerala coast around May 26, laying the groundwork for a phased relief across the rest of the country by the first week of June.

Health and Public Safety Guidelines:

Citizens residing within severe heatwave zones are strongly urged to restrict direct outdoor exposure between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. To combat dehydration, maintain regular fluid consumption, use loose, light-colored cotton apparel, and utilize oral rehydration salts (ORS), fresh lime water, or balanced electrolyte formulations. Conversely, travelers in the northeastern and southern belts should secure safe indoor shelter during thunder activities, keeping a safe distance from high-voltage transmission lines and weak trees.

Disclaimer: This regional meteorological analysis is compiled for public information and general awareness purposes. The specific temperature indices, atmospheric models, and safety alerts are derived from satellite imagery and diagnostic bulletins published by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 18, 2026. Because local micro-climatic networks are subject to sudden transitions, individuals are advised to check live radar feeds on the official IMD portal or their authorized ‘Mausam’ application prior to finalizing transport schedules, agricultural logistics, or outdoor events.

According to the latest forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), India is experiencing highly diverse weather patterns today, May 16, 2026. This year, several parts of the country are recording above-average rainfall for the month of May, bringing much-needed relief from the intense summer heat. However, plains across Northwest and Central India continue to face scorching temperatures and ongoing heatwave conditions, while pre-monsoon activities remain fully active across South and East India.

Regional Weather and Temperature Breakdown

Due to geographical variations, the weather conditions and maximum temperatures across major regions and metropolitan cities today are as follows:

Delhi-NCR and North India: The capital and its surrounding regions will experience primarily clear skies, with partial cloud cover developing by afternoon or evening. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 40°C and 44°C. While isolated pockets might see light drizzle accompanied by strong gusty winds, heatwave conditions will persist.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Northwest India: This region is currently bearing the brunt of the peak summer heat. Mercury levels in several districts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are projected to hit between 44°C and 47°C. The weather department has issued severe heatwave alerts for these zones, advising citizens to take necessary precautions.

Mumbai and West India (Maharashtra & Gujarat): Coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, along with Gujarat, continues to experience hot and highly humid weather. Daytime temperatures are likely to range from 35°C to 38°C. Parts of the Konkan region may witness light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Bengaluru and Karnataka: Southern Karnataka and Bengaluru are enjoying remarkably pleasant weather. The maximum daytime temperature is staying between 28°C and 32°C, which is significantly lower than typical seasonal averages. Light to moderate evening showers are highly anticipated.

Chennai and South India (Kerala & Tamil Nadu): Driven by active pre-monsoon systems, widespread areas of Kerala and interior Tamil Nadu are receiving moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Chennai will remain mostly cloudy today with scattered light showers, maintaining temperatures between 32°C and 37°C.

Kolkata and East/Northeast India: Thunderstorm, lightning, and squall warnings have been issued across West Bengal, Bihar, and the northeastern states. Temperatures in Kolkata are expected to range from 34°C to 38°C amid cloudy conditions.

What is Driving This Weather Variation?

An analysis of the IMD’s monthly outlook indicates that moisture-laden winds traveling from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are triggering early pre-monsoon systems across Southern and Eastern India. Conversely, the continuous influx of dry, continental westerly winds is sustaining high thermal pressure and heatwave conditions over the northern and western plains.

Essential Health and Safety Guidelines

For Heat-Affected Zones: Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Stay well-hydrated by drinking ample water and wear light-colored, breathable cotton clothing.

For Rain-Affected Zones: Seek shelter in stable, permanent structures during periods of heavy lightning and strong winds. Avoid standing near weak trees or temporary hoardings.

For Farmers: Given the unpredictable weather shifts, secure harvested crops in covered spaces and schedule irrigation fields strictly based on localized, short-term updates.

Disclaimer: This weather report is compiled from official data issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other global meteorological platforms available as of May 16, 2026. Weather is a dynamic natural phenomenon, and sudden localized variations are common. Please consult your local meteorological center for real-time live updates before planning travel or agricultural activities.

India is expected to witness intense summer conditions on 28 April 2026, with severe heatwave conditions affecting many parts of North, Central, and Western India. Temperatures remain 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal in several states. However, due to a weak western disturbance, light rain, thunderstorms, and dust storms may bring temporary relief to Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and nearby regions by evening.

Eastern and Northeastern states including West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to experience pre-monsoon activity with light rainfall and cloudy skies. Southern and Central India will mostly remain hot and dry throughout the day.

Heatwave Continues in North India

Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are expected to face strong sunlight and hot winds throughout the day. In Delhi, the maximum temperature may reach 42 to 44 degrees Celsius. Weather conditions may change during the afternoon, and light rain or thunderstorms are possible by evening.

According to the weather department, western disturbance activity between 28 and 30 April may lead to strong winds, thunderstorms, and temporary rainfall in several northern states.

Maharashtra Faces Extreme Heat

Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra are experiencing the highest temperatures in the country. The temperature may touch 45 degrees Celsius in some areas. Mumbai will remain hot and humid, although no rainfall is expected. Coastal humidity will make the weather feel even warmer.

Rain Likely in Eastern India

Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal may witness light rainfall today. Heavy rainfall is also possible in some areas on 29 and 30 April. Assam, Meghalaya, and other Northeastern states are likely to continue seeing cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and scattered showers.

Hot and Dry Weather in South India

Cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad will mostly remain dry today. Chennai may record temperatures up to 37 degrees Celsius, while Bengaluru will have relatively moderate weather. Hyderabad will remain hot with dry winds during the day.

Weather in Major Cities

Delhi

Air Quality Remains a Concern

Delhi and Mumbai continue to report poor Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru remain in the moderate category, while Chennai records good air quality, making it one of the cleaner metro cities today.

Safety Tips for People

People living in heatwave-affected areas should avoid going outside during the afternoon. Wear light-colored clothes, cover your head, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. In North India, where thunderstorms and strong winds are expected, people should avoid open areas and stay indoors during lightning activity.

Children, elderly people, and patients with breathing or heart-related problems should take extra precautions in cities with poor AQI levels.

Conclusion

28 April 2026 is expected to be a challenging weather day across India. While severe heatwave conditions continue in many states, North India may get some evening relief through light rain and thunderstorms. Staying alert and following weather department advisories will be important for public safety.
