Hong Kong, China – A Hong Kong court has convicted Jimmy Lai, a prominent media tycoon and staunch critic of Beijing, in a landmark national security case. The court found 78-year-old Jimmy Lai guilty of conspiring with foreign powers to endanger national security and publishing seditious articles.

The case was being tried under Hong Kong’s controversial National Security Law, which was implemented in 2019 following anti-government protests. The court concluded that Lai conspired with foreign powers to undermine Hong Kong’s security. However, Lai has pleaded not guilty. The court has taken additional time to decide on his sentence, and he could face life imprisonment under the National Security Law.

Lai was arrested in August 2020 and has been convicted of several minor offenses. His family members, including his wife and son, as well as Hong Kong’s Roman Catholic Cardinal Joseph Zen, were present at the hearing.

Jimmy Lai, who now looks frailer and thinner than ever, founded the now-shuttered Apple Daily, a pro-democracy newspaper once considered a symbol of Hong Kong’s independence. The court convicted him of colluding with foreign powers to endanger national security and spreading seditious material.

Tiktok Deal : Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding TikTok in the US, President Donald Trump announced a significant agreement this week, under which the popular video app will now be controlled by American investors. This move comes after TikTok was banned from app stores a few months ago, threatening its future.

Speaking to the media in the Oval Office on Thursday, Vice President J.D. Vance described the deal as a “balanced solution.” He said that while there was some disagreement from the Chinese side during the process, the ultimate goal was to ensure the data security of American users and keep the app operational.

Vance expressed confidence, saying, “People will now be able to use TikTok with greater confidence than ever before because their personal data will be secure and will not be used for any political or propaganda agenda.”While there has been no official response from the Chinese government regarding the agreement, Trump claims that the agreement has received the approval of the Chinese administration.

Under this new arrangement, an executive order has been issued that ensures that American investors will own a majority stake in TikTok. At the same time, the Chinese company ByteDance’s stake will be reduced to less than 20%.

This agreement is being considered a major turning point in American politics and the technology world, putting TikTok’s future in the US on a more stable path.
