Hollywood actor and musician Jena Malone recently opened up about a disturbing experience from her early career. In an interview with People magazine, she revealed that following the release of the 1998 classic drama Stepmom, she faced an “unsettling” encounter on a New York subway when she was just 14 years old.
The Subway Threat
Jena Malone, who played Anna, the daughter of Susan Sarandon’s character in the film, recalled the incident:
- The Interaction: A woman recognized Jena on the subway and asked if she was the girl from Stepmom.
- The Shocking Response: As soon as Jena confirmed her identity, the woman looked at her and said, “I just wanted to slap you.”
- Jena’s Reaction: At the time, the young actress wasn’t socially prepared for such aggression. The encounter left her so startled that she considered lying about her identity in public moving forward to protect herself.
A Son’s Honesty and Public Life
Malone also shared a humorous and heartwarming detail about her 8-year-old son, Ode Mountain. She noted that whenever she tries to avoid fan recognition in public, her son often calls her out.
“Sometimes I don’t feel like saying yes, but then he’ll be like, ‘Did you just lie? Go back and tell them that you were that person!’ Sometimes he even starts a line for autographs and says, ‘Yes, she is. Here she is, let’s all line up!'”
Return to Music
Beyond acting, Malone has returned to her musical roots after a decade-long hiatus. On May 8, she released her new album, ‘Flowers for Men.’ She describes the record’s style as “Sci-Fi Folk,” exploring the complexities of love, attachment theories, and modern relationship dynamics.
