Iran Suspends Visa Waiver for Indians: What to Know

1 Mins read

In a significant shift in travel policy, Iran has announced the suspension of its visa-waiver facility for Indian passport holders. This decision, set to take effect from November 22, 2025, comes as a direct response to rising cases of misuse by criminal networks.

Until now, Indian tourists could enter Iran without a prior visa for short stays. However, this convenience was increasingly being exploited by illegal agents to trap unsuspecting Indians in job frauds and human trafficking schemes.

Why Did Iran Take This Step?

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed that criminal elements were using the “visa-free” tag to lure Indians with false promises of lucrative jobs.

  • The Trap: Agents would convince job seekers that entry into Iran was easy and legal without a visa.
  • The Reality: Once these individuals landed in Iran, they were often held hostage, kidnapped for ransom, or illegally transported to third countries for forced labor.
  • The Action: To break this chain, the Iranian government, in consultation with Indian authorities, decided that a mandatory visa process would add a layer of scrutiny, making it harder for traffickers to operate.

MEA’s Strong Warning

The Indian government has issued a stern advisory for anyone planning to travel to Iran.

  • Get a Visa: From November 22 onwards, you must obtain a valid visa before your journey.
  • Be Alert: Do not trust agents offering “easy passage” to other countries via Iran.
  • Verify Jobs: If you are traveling for work, ensure your employment contract is verified by the Protector of Emigrants (POE).

This move, while adding a step for genuine tourists, is seen as a necessary measure to protect Indian citizens from falling prey to dangerous international syndicates.
