WASHINGTON: Legendary singer-pianist Billy Joel’s journey from a struggling artist to a global superstar is set to be immortalized on the silver screen. Director John Ottman has been announced to helm Billy & Me, a feature film that explores the formative years of the music icon, long before the fame and his iconic 1973 breakthrough, Piano Man.
A Story Behind the Music
Rather than a standard biopic, Billy & Me focuses on the crucial period between 1966 and 1972. The narrative is framed through the perspective of Irwin Mazur, Joel’s first manager, who discovered the young musician in 1966 and guided his career until his pivotal deal with Columbia Records in 1972.
The production has secured exclusive rights to Mazur’s life story, along with the participation of Joel’s longtime friend and former bandmate, Jon Small. Small, who played in Joel’s early bands like The Hassles and Attila, is serving as a consultant, co-executive producer, and second-unit director.
An Authentic Portrayal
Reflecting on the project, director John Ottman shared his enthusiasm for the human story at the center of the film: “It’s funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately very inspiring. This is about the formative years of Billy and his relationship with Irwin Mazur, the man who recognized Billy’s amazing talent even before Billy did himself.”
Jon Small echoed these sentiments, noting that the script avoids the trap of mythmaking common in celebrity biopics. “This is the most honest, heartfelt, and authentic portrayal of Billy’s early life… it captures not just the music, but the friendships, struggles, humor, and creative spark that defined those years,” Small stated.
