Beijing, China – On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that he had accepted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s invitation to visit Beijing in April. Trump also invited Xi Jinping to pay a state visit to the US later this year.
Phone Conversation Between Xi and Trump:
This significant announcement came hours after a phone call between Trump and Xi. The two leaders discussed a number of important international issues, including the Ukraine crisis, the fentanyl drug trade, and trade issues such as soybeans. Prior to this phone call, the two leaders met in person a month ago in Busan, South Korea.
Stressing the Strength of China-US Relations:
In his remarks, Trump said, “Our relationship with China is very strong.” While China provided information about the call, it did not provide any information about the state visits between the leaders of the two countries. According to Xinhua, Xi told Trump that Taiwan’s return to mainland China is an important part of the post-World War II international order.

Reflections on Rising Tensions Between Taiwan and Japan:
The rising tensions between China and Taiwan were also discussed. China claims Taiwan, a self-governing island, and considers it part of its sovereignty. Xi told Trump that China and the United States should safeguard the victorious results of World War II, as the two countries fought together during the war.
Recently, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that if China takes military action against Taiwan, the Japanese military could intervene. This statement has raised concerns in China, and this may be why Xi Jinping discussed this issue with Trump over the phone.
Step Toward a New Direction in China-US Relations:
According to analysts, this phone call and the invitation for state visits could mark a new direction in China-US relations. According to the Xinhua news agency, Xi said that China and the United States, which fought together in World War II, should work together to safeguard their historical contributions.
