Guwahati. England started their campaign in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 with a resounding victory over South Africa. England’s bowlers wreaked havoc in Friday’s match, bowling out South Africa for just 69 runs. In response, England scored 73 runs without losing a wicket in just 14.1 overs to win the match by 10 wickets.

Linsey Smith shines in spin attack

Left-arm spinner Linsey Smith laid the foundation for England’s victory, taking 3 wickets for just 7 runs. The South African batsmen were unable to withstand her impressive performance. Besides Smith, captain Nat Sciver Brunt (2 for 5), Sophie Ecclestone (2 for 19), and Charlie Dean (2 for 14) played a key role in wrapping up the South African innings.

South Africa’s Shameful Batting

South Africa only lasted 20.4 overs and were all out for 69 runs. This is South Africa’s second-lowest total in Women’s ODI World Cup history. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sinao Jafta was the only one to struggle, scoring 22 runs. No other batsman reached double figures.

England’s Openers Achieve the Target

In response, England’s opening pair achieved the target in a one-sided fashion. Amy Jones scored an unbeaten 40 and Tammy Beaumont scored an unbeaten 21 to lead the team to a 10-wicket victory. With this win, England has secured the number-one spot in the points table.

Eyes on the Next Matches

This victory for England is not only a confidence booster but also a clear message to other teams that the English team has entered this tournament as a strong contender. At the same time, South Africa needs to seriously work on its weaknesses.
