The political deadlock that gripped Tamil Nadu for five days following the May 4 election results appears to be nearing a resolution. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, but the lack of a clear majority (118 seats) initially led to a tense standoff.

As of today, a coalition has finally solidified around Vijay. However, political analysts note that this support is rooted less in a shared ideological vision and more in a strategic “lesser of two evils” maneuver to prevent centralized control over the state.

The Looming Threat of President’s Rule

The primary catalyst for regional parties coalescing behind TVK was the imminent threat of President’s Rule under Article 356. With the previous assembly’s tenure set to expire on May 10, the state faced a constitutional vacuum. For Tamil Nadu’s regional players, the prospect of the state being governed directly from New Delhi was politically unacceptable. This “hard deadline” forced parties to move quickly to ensure a locally-led government took the oath of office.

The Opening Move: Congress and the Left

The Indian National Congress (INC) broke the initial silence by pivoting away from its long-term alliance with the DMK. Offering the support of its 5 MLAs, the Congress set a clear condition: the TVK must ensure that no “communal forces” (referencing the BJP) are allowed into the governing alliance.

Following this, on May 8, both the CPI and CPI(M) pledged their 2 seats each to the TVK. Their leadership framed the decision as a “democratic duty” to prevent the BJP from gaining an indirect foothold in the state administration through the Governor’s office. These endorsements brought Vijay’s tally to 116.

VCK and IUML: The Final Piece of the Puzzle

The most vocal pragmatist in these negotiations was VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalavan. His support was seen as the turning point. Thirumavalavan was candid about his motivations, stating that his party supported Vijay solely to avoid the dissolution of the Assembly and the imposition of President’s Rule. “There is no other political justification,” he noted, emphasizing that the decision was a tactical necessity rather than a permanent alignment.

In a unique move, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also extended its 2 seats to the TVK. Interestingly, the IUML declared it would remain part of the DMK-led alliance while simultaneously supporting the TVK’s bid to form the government—a rare “split” support strategy intended to ensure a functional state government. With these final numbers, the TVK-led bloc has reached a total of 120 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 118.

The Road Ahead

While Vijay has successfully navigated the numbers game to form a government, the nature of this “support by necessity” suggests a challenging road ahead. Managing a coalition born out of a shared fear of central intervention, rather than a shared manifesto, will be the first true test of the actor-turned-politician’s leadership and diplomatic acumen.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have signaled a tectonic shift in the state’s political landscape. Actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have emerged as the single largest force in the 234-member House. According to early counting trends, TVK is leading in 111 seats, placing it remarkably close to the majority mark of 118.

This stunning debut—the party’s first electoral contest since its launch in February 2024—has sparked massive celebrations among supporters outside Vijay’s residence in Chennai.

A Fractured Mandate: DMK and AIADMK Trail

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is currently trailing with approximately 63 seats. Meanwhile, the AIADMK holds a lead in roughly 60 seats. These numbers suggest a fractured mandate, potentially leading to a hung assembly where “coalition mathematics” will dictate who occupies Fort St. George.

TVK leaders have remained optimistic, describing the results as a “Silent Vijay Wave.” Party spokesperson Felix Gerald noted that the numbers reflect a deep-seated public desire for an alternative to the traditional Dravidian majors.

The Government Formation Math: Three Possible Scenarios

Despite being the frontrunner, Vijay faces the immediate challenge of securing the final 7 seats required for a majority. Here are the three potential pathways:

1. Support from Smaller Parties

Seeking backing from smaller entities is the most likely route to maintain TVK’s identity as an alternative force. Parties like the PMK (7 seats), Congress (3), VCK (2), and CPI (2) could act as kingmakers. Relying on them would allow Vijay to form a government without a formal tie-up with his larger rivals, though these parties may demand cabinet portfolios or specific policy shifts in return.

2. A Post-Poll Alliance with AIADMK

While pre-election talks between TVK and AIADMK did not materialize due to leadership and seat-sharing disputes, the post-poll reality has shifted the power balance. An alliance with AIADMK would provide administrative stability and experience. However, this could complicate Vijay’s stance on the BJP, a party he criticized during his campaign, given AIADMK’s historical leanings.

3. Indirect Support via the DMK Alliance

A direct pact with the DMK is highly improbable, as Vijay framed the party as his primary ideological opponent. However, indirect support from national parties like Congress—currently part of the DMK bloc—cannot be entirely ruled out if the political winds shift.

Conclusion

While Vijay has achieved a historic breakthrough, the transition from a “superstar” to a “stable administrator” depends on his ability to navigate coalition politics. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the TVK can stitch together a stable government or if the state is headed toward a period of political uncertainty.
