CHENNAI. The year 2026 has marked a historic milestone in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. Following the recently concluded assembly elections, ‘Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’ (TVK), emerging as a formidable new political force under the leadership of popular actor turned politician C.
Blended Synergy of Youth and Experience: The cabinet smartly utilizes veteran expertise, placing experienced leaders like K.A.
Chennai | May 8, 2026

On May 4, a political earthquake shook Tamil Nadu. A party just two years old, led by a cinema icon and fueled by fan clubs, didn’t just win—it dismantled a 59-year-old duopoly. However, the path from being the single largest party to crossing the finish line of a majority was a high-stakes numbers game that kept the state on edge for four days.

Here is the breakdown of how Thalapathy Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), solved the assembly arithmetic.

The 108 Dilemma and the ‘Double Win’ Problem

In a 234-member house, the magic number for a simple majority is 118. On results day, TVK emerged as the leader with 108 seats, ending the long-standing reign of the DMK and AIADMK.

However, the math was even tighter than it looked:

The Seat Vacancy: Vijay contested and won from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East. By law, he had to vacate one, bringing TVK’s effective strength down to 107.

The Gap: This left Vijay 11 seats short of the majority (considering the house strength would effectively be 233 during the formation process, making the new majority mark 117).

The First Move: Congress Breaks Ranks

The first major shift occurred on May 5. The Indian National Congress, which won 5 seats as part of the DMK-led alliance, decided to back TVK.

The Rationale: Congress cited its desire for a “secular government” and noted that Vijay had named Congress icon K. Kamaraj as an ideological hero.

The Backlash: The DMK was livid, calling the move a “major betrayal.” Senior DMK leaders declared the ‘INDIA’ bloc in the state effectively dead. This moved Vijay to 112 seats—still 5 short.

The Left and VCK: Solving the Final Equation

The final breakthrough came on Friday, May 8. After days of internal meetings and weighing the risk of President’s Rule (Central rule), the remaining allies of the former DMK front joined the fold.

The Left Front: Both the CPI and CPI(M) (2 seats each) announced their support to “thwart the objectives of the BJP.”

VCK & IUML: The VCK (2 seats) and IUML (2 seats) followed suit.

The Final Tally:

TVK: 107

Congress: 5

CPI / CPI(M) / VCK / IUML: 8

Total: 120 MLAs (Comfortably past the 117 mark).

The Governor’s Invitation

After meeting Governor Rajendra Arlekar three times in three days and presenting the letters of support from all five allied parties, the deadlock was broken. The Governor officially invited Vijay to form the government, narrowly avoiding a constitutional crisis as the previous assembly’s term was set to expire on May 10.

Expert Analysis

This realignment marks a profound shift in voter sentiment. While Vijay built TVK as an alternative to the “old guard,” he ultimately needed the support of the very allies that the DMK had cultivated for years. The irony is sharp: Vijay won alone but will govern with a coalition. The stability of this “rainbow coalition” will be the first major test for the new Chief Minister.

Disclaimer: This report is based on the final legislative tallies and official support declarations from the respective political parties as of May 8, 2026. The swearing-in ceremony is officially scheduled for Saturday.
