“A 300 Strike Rate Isn’t Enough”: Hayden’s Advice

During the match, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi displayed fearless intent, scoring 30 runs at a staggering strike rate of 300. While his aggressive approach entertained the crowd, Hayden emphasized that such cameos aren’t enough when chasing massive totals.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hayden noted:

“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was a great example of an exciting young talent. He batted and made 30 at a strike rate of 300. But when you are chasing around 220, you need to bat longer and take the game to the end. You can’t just focus on the Powerplay.”

Examples of Gill and Sudharsan

Matthew Hayden pointed toward Gujarat Titans’ top-order batters, specifically Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, as role models for the youngster. He explained how these players maintain a strike rate of around 150 while ensuring they bat “deep” into the innings.

According to Hayden, a successful batter must treat the latter half of a T20 innings with the focus of an ODI or a Test match to ensure they finish the game. He described Gujarat’s top three as “apex predators” who build a solid unit and stay at the crease long enough to dismantle the opposition.

Match Summary: Gujarat Dominates

• Gujarat’s Batting: Powered by half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, Gujarat posted a daunting total of 229/4 in their 20 over.
• Rajasthan’s Chase: In response, Rajasthan Royals were bundled out for just 152.
• Bowling Brilliance: Rashid Khan’s spin dismantled the Rajasthan middle order, finishing with 4 wickets, while Jason Holder polished off the tail with 3 wickets.

Do-or-Die for Rajasthan

This loss has dealt a heavy blow to Rajasthan Royals’ playoff hopes. Sanju Samson’s side must now win all their remaining matches to stay in contention for the next round.

Conclusion

Matthew Hayden’s advice serves as a vital lesson for young talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. While aggression is the soul of T20 cricket, true “match-winners” are those who can anchor an innings and see a chase through to the end. Vaibhav clearly has the talent; the next step is mastering the art of building a long, match-winning knock.

The atmosphere in Guwahati was electric, and despite a brief rain delay, the fans were treated to a spectacle of power-hitting that will be remembered for years to come.

The Sooryavanshi Storm: 15 Balls of Pure Mayhem

Chasing a target of 202 is never easy, especially when you lose a partner like Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the innings. However, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi seemed to be playing on a different planet. From the very first ball he faced against Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he sent a clear message: he wasn’t there to survive; he was there to conquer.

Key Highlights of the Blitzkrieg:

• The Start: He began by shoveling a near-yorker from Bhuvneshwar Kumar straight past the bowler for a boundary.
• Tearing into Hazlewood: When Josh Hazlewood—freshly returned from injury—came on, Sooryavanshi plundered 19 runs in a single over, treating one of the world’s best clinical bowlers like a net bowler.
• The Milestone: He reached his fifty in just 15 balls, matching the feat he recently achieved against CSK. He brought up the landmark with back-to-back sixes off Bhuvneshwar Kumar, including a brutal cross-batted bludgeon and a high top-edge that sailed over the ropes.

By the end of the 5th over, Rajasthan Royals were cruising at 73/1, with Sooryavanshi standing tall on 53.

First Innings Recap: RCB’s Gritty 201

Earlier in the evening, after being put into bat by RR captain Riyan Parag, RCB faced a rollercoaster of an innings. The Guwahati pitch, known for its true bounce, offered plenty of runs but also rewarded clever bowling.

The Kohli Surge and the Middle-Order Collapse

Virat Kohli started with his trademark elegance, taking on Jofra Archer and Sandeep Sharma. However, the introduction of Ravi Bishnoi turned the game on its head. Bishnoi cleaned up Kohli with a disguised googly that drifted in and dipped late, leaving the legend completely deceived.

RCB slumped to 94/6 at one stage, but the recovery was led by Rajat Patidar. Patidar, the RCB skipper, showed immense maturity. He was struggling at 20 off 22 balls before shifting gears to finish with 50 off 35 balls. His two sixes off Nandre Burger were the highlights of the RCB innings.

The Impact of Venkatesh Iyer

Coming in as an Impact Player, Venkatesh Iyer played a crucial cameo of 29* runs. He took apart Sandeep Sharma in the final over, collecting 20 runs to propel RCB to a competitive total of 201/7.

Who is Brijesh Sharma? The Silent Assassin

While Sooryavanshi stole the headlines, RR’s debutant Brijesh Sharma played a pivotal role. Hailing from Udhampur, the 27-year-old leg-spinner proved that age is just a number. He picked up the crucial wickets of Jitesh Sharma and Tim David, stalling RCB’s momentum during the middle overs. His journey from Jammu & Kashmir to the Rajasthan Royals is a testament to the scouting brilliance of the franchise.

Tactical Masterclass: Riyan Parag’s Captaincy

Leading his side in his home town, Riyan Parag made excellent use of the conditions. Citing the rain and moisture, he opted to bowl first. His decision to rotate his spinners—Jadeja, Bishnoi, and Brijesh—kept the RCB batters guessing. Despite the late surge by Patidar and Iyer, RR’s bowlers managed to keep the target within a reachable range on a fast Guwahati outfield.

Records Broken Tonight

1. Fastest Fifty (Joint Record): Vaibhav Sooryavanshi now holds the record for the two fastest fifties of the 2026 season (both in 15 balls).
2. Youngest Power-Hitter: At 15, he is the youngest player in IPL history to score multiple half-centuries in a single season.
3. Guwahati High-Score: The powerplay score of 73/1 is one of the highest recorded at the Barsapara Stadium in IPL history.

The “Jayasuriya” Comparison

Cricket pundits and commentators, including Shashank Kishore, have noted the “Jayasuriya-esque” nature of Sooryavanshi’s batting. His ability to whip the ball over square leg and his fearlessness in using his feet against pace bowlers have drawn comparisons to the Sri Lankan legend. His mentor, Zubin Bharucha, has clearly instilled a sense of technical discipline that allows him to execute these high-risk shots with remarkable consistency.

What This Means for the Tournament?

Both teams entered this match undefeated. While RCB showed great heart to recover from a collapse, the sheer individual brilliance of Sooryavanshi has tipped the scales in favor of the Royals. This win (or performance) cements Rajasthan’s position at the top of the table and sends a warning to every other franchise: The Royals have found a superstar.

Conclusion

The 2026 IPL is shaping up to be the year of the youth. Whether it is Brijesh Sharma’s discipline or Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s explosive power, the talent pool in Indian cricket is deeper than ever. For RCB, they will need to go back to the drawing board regarding their powerplay bowling. For RR, they just need to let Vaibhav fly.

Born in 2011, Vaibhav’s fascination with cricket began as soon as he learned to hold a bat. His early years were filled with rigorous practice sessions, competitive junior tournaments, and a growing reputation that soon reached state-level selectors.

His first big milestone came when he debuted for Bihar in first-class cricket at just 12. The achievement itself was historic, but what followed was even more extraordinary — a call-up to the Indian Premier League.

Joining Rajasthan Royals, Vaibhav made an explosive entry into the world’s toughest T20 league. His debut featured clean hitting, a striking six on the first ball he faced, and a maturity that impressed cricket veterans. Shortly after, he scored a blistering 101 off 38 balls, becoming the youngest player ever to hit a T20 century in India.

Beyond franchise cricket, Vaibhav delivered a memorable performance in the Under-19 World Cup final, where he scored a commanding 175. His ability to perform on big stages has made him a fan favourite and an exciting prospect for the national team’s future.

With dedication, natural talent, and the right guidance, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi appears destined for long-term success — a name Indian cricket will remember for years to come.
