In Karauli district, a fire broke out in the hilly upper region of Khirkari settlements near village Arora in the Mandrayal area. Acting on information from the Forest Department and instructions from the fire in-charge, the firefighting team rushed to the location to control the blaze.

Difficult Terrain Delays Response

The team initially reached village Arora, but there was no accessible route for the fire engine to reach the hilltop area where the fire had spread. As a result, firefighters had to take an alternative and longer route via Kaila Devi, covering more than 15 kilometers through Rahir Banjara to reach the affected area.

Despite the difficult terrain, the team made continuous efforts to bring the fire under control.

Water Shortage Hampers Operation

During the operation, the fire engine ran out of water. The situation became more challenging as there were no nearby water sources available, and the terrain made further movement difficult. Following instructions from Forest Department officials, the team had to return to the Karauli fire station.

The firefighting team included driver Suraj Dagar and fire personnel Sheeshram Gurjar, Vimlesh Mali, Lalu Gurjar, Akshay Sharma, and Dharmendra Singh, who were involved in the operation.

Contract Workers Highlight Ongoing Issues

The incident has also brought attention to the problems faced by contractual fire department workers. These personnel reportedly do not receive leave benefits or overtime allowances, despite working in high-risk conditions.

According to Dharmendra Singh, District President of the Contractual Fire Workers Association, the issue of pending salaries has been raised multiple times with the District Collector, the minister in charge, and officials of the municipal council.

Salaries Pending for Months

The workers are facing serious financial difficulties due to delayed payments:

Four months’ salary up to October 2024 has not been paid by the contractor

Salaries for January and February are still pending from another agency

Payments for subsequent months have also not been cleared by the current contractor

Due to these delays, many workers are struggling to support their families.

Appeal to Media

All contractual firefighters from the Karauli fire station have appealed to print and digital media to highlight their situation so that the concerned authorities take action and resolve the issue of unpaid salaries.

Conclusion

The incident highlights both the operational challenges faced by firefighters in remote areas and the ongoing struggles of contractual workers. While they continue to risk their lives in emergency situations, the lack of timely salary payments and basic benefits remains a serious concern.
