JODHPUR: As the scorching summer heat peaks, the Rajasthan government is shifting into an active gear to combat potential water scarcity. Taking stock of the ground reality, the State Minister for Parliamentary and Legal Affairs, Shri Jogaram Patel, conducted a comprehensive tour of the Luni and Rajaur villages in the Jodhpur district on Saturday (June 13).

During his visit, the minister not only engaged in direct dialogue with the local residents to understand their daily struggles but also issued stringent directives to the administrative machinery to ensure a flawless water supply system.

“Step Out of Offices”: Strict Directives to PHED Officials

Addressing the officials of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Minister Patel made it crystal clear that a water crisis in any village or remote hamlet (dhani) will not be tolerated during the harsh summer months. Providing regular, clean, and safe drinking water to the public remains the top priority of the state government.

He strictly instructed the engineering staff to remain active in the field and personally monitor the water pipelines. Any technical faults or leakages must be repaired immediately. Furthermore, he mandated that areas where pipeline supply is temporarily disrupted—especially the tail-end villages—must immediately be serviced through alternative arrangements like water tankers to ensure no household goes without water.

Monsoon Preparations: Cleaning the Luni Pond

Keeping an eye on the upcoming rainy season, Shri Patel inspected the condition of the local pond in Luni. He immediately directed the Panchayati Raj Department officials to launch a thorough cleaning drive of the pond and its surrounding catchment area before the monsoon arrives. This proactive step aims to maximize rainwater conservation and ensure the stored water can be utilized effectively throughout the year.

A Heartfelt Appeal to Revive Traditional Water Heritage

Expressing deep concern over the rapidly depleting groundwater levels and the escalating global water crisis, the Minister highlighted the urgent need to protect traditional water sources.

He pointed out that ancient water bodies such as traditional wells, stepwells (baoris), and village ponds are facing severe neglect today. “These heritage sources are not just the foundation of our water self-reliance but are also critical for maintaining environmental balance,” Patel noted. Concluding his visit, he passionately urged the villagers to adopt rainwater harvesting techniques and participate in the restoration of these traditional reservoirs to secure water for future generations.

Jaipur: Amidst the severe heatwave gripping the state, the Rajasthan government has intensified its efforts to combat the drinking water crisis and provide relief to the public. Operating under the strict directives of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has swung into full action mode. The six special state-wide campaigns launched by the department have yielded highly positive results, ensuring smooth and clean water supply across regions.

According to official data, these targeted campaigns have successfully resolved 15,995 drinking water-related complaints and issues, bringing massive relief to thousands of families during this scorching summer.

By the Numbers: How is the Public Getting Relief?

Special PHED teams have been working round the clock to restore the state’s water supply infrastructure. Major improvement works completed during these six campaigns include:

Repairing Handpumps and Leaks: The department successfully repaired 3,077 faulty handpumps across the state and fixed 1,644 pipeline leakages, preventing immense water wastage.

Improving Supply and Pressure: Low water pressure issues were resolved at 978 locations, and regular water supply was restored in 1,144 areas that were facing complete disruptions.

Tackling Contaminated Water: The teams swiftly addressed 121 complaints regarding dirty or polluted water. Additionally, hundreds of cases related to short-duration and low-volume supply were permanently fixed.

Strict Action on Water Theft: 1,401 Illegal Connections Removed

Illegal connections remain a major contributor to water scarcity. Prioritizing water conservation, the department cracked down heavily on water theft, removing a total of 1,401 illegal water connections during the drive.

In the sixth phase of the campaign alone, 336 illegal connections were severed. These were being unlawfully used by hotels, roadside dhabas, Saras dairy booths, and for agricultural purposes. This strict enforcement has significantly boosted water availability for domestic use by the general public.

On-the-Spot Solutions: 2,600 Complaints Resolved Instantly

The department carried out intensive ground inspections in both urban and rural areas. Demonstrating high administrative efficiency, technical teams resolved nearly 2,600 complaints on the spot. Furthermore, 550 additional water infrastructure improvement projects were completed in rural areas, deeply strengthening the rural water supply network.

The Government’s Goal: Clean Water for Every Household

Departmental reports indicate that these special campaigns, which began on April 5, have effectively mitigated a severe potential drinking water crisis. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s clear mandate is to ensure that adequate, regular, and clean drinking water reaches every village, hamlet, and urban ward during this challenging weather.

Tonk/Jaipur | May 12, 2026

Public Health Engineering Minister Issues Directions for Strengthening Water Supply

As part of the Gram Rath Campaign, the Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHED), Mr. Kanhiya Lal Choudhary, conducted a Night Chaupal (Village Gathering) in Chainpura village, located in the Malpura constituency of Tonk district. A large number of villagers attended the session to share their concerns and suggestions directly with the Minister.

Strict Directives on Water Supply Amid Heatwave

Given the intense summer heat, the PHED Minister issued firm instructions to departmental officials to ensure a robust water supply system:

Monitoring Illegal Connections: The Minister directed officials to maintain strict vigilance against unauthorized water connections to ensure uninterrupted and smooth drinking water supply for the general public.

Infrastructure Strengthening: He ordered officials to prioritize the maintenance and strengthening of the water supply network across rural blocks.

Empowering Farmers and Enhancing Income

Minister Choudhary highlighted the state and central government’s commitment to the “Antyodaya” vision—uplifting the last person in the queue. Key highlights for the agricultural sector included:

Kisan Samman Nidhi: The annual financial assistance for farmers has been increased from ₹6,000 to ₹9,000. More than ₹12,000 crore has been transferred directly into the accounts of over 76 lakh farmers in the state.

Interest-Free Loans: Under the Rajasthan Cooperative Gopal Credit Card Scheme, farmers are now eligible for interest-free loans up to ₹1 lakh.

Agricultural Ecosystem: The Minister noted that initiatives like ‘GRAM-2026′ are being organized to create a stronger ecosystem to double farmers’ income and provide better crop insurance claim processing.

Administrative Coordination

The public hearing was attended by Tonk District Collector Tina Dabi and CEO Parshuram Dhanka. Villagers raised issues concerning electricity, education, health, and other basic infrastructure. Minister Choudhary assured that the state government is committed to taking development to every doorstep and that the Gram Rath Campaign is a vital bridge for this mission.

Conclusion

The Night Chaupal in Chainpura served as a proactive platform for grassroots governance. By addressing immediate needs like drinking water and promoting long-term financial schemes like interest-free loans, the government aims to ensure both the survival and prosperity of the rural population during the harsh summer months.
