During the ceremony, Neeraj Chopra was seen in military uniform, making the occasion even more special. He previously held the rank of Subedar Major in the Indian Army.

From Village to Olympics, Now to the Army

27-year-old Neeraj, a resident of Khandra village in Haryana’s Panipat district, created history by winning a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He is the first track and field athlete to win medals for the country at two consecutive Olympics.

President gave approval

In a notification issued by the Ministry of Defense in May this year, the President stated that Neeraj had been granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, effective April 16, 2025. This rank was conferred on him under the Territorial Army Regulations 1948.

Now Neeraj after Dhoni

Before Neeraj Chopra, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army in 2011. Now, Neeraj has joined the select group of athletes in the country to receive this honor.
