Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh) | May 14, 2026

A tragic and sensational incident has emerged from the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. On Wednesday afternoon, a 55-year-old man attempted to take his own life by slitting his throat with a knife after paying his respects at the statue of Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The incident occurred at Ambedkar Park under the jurisdiction of the Baragaon police station, leaving the victim in a critical state.

Incident Details: A Drastic Step Following a Devotional Gesture

According to eyewitnesses and police reports, Ramratan Ahirwar (55), a resident of Baragaon town, arrived at the park at approximately 2:00 PM on Wednesday. Witnesses noted that he first approached the statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, touched the feet of the monument, and bowed his head in reverence. Moments later, he pulled a knife from his pocket and slit his own throat in full view of the public. Before onlookers could intervene, Ramratan collapsed, bleeding profusely.

The Motivation Behind the Act

Initial investigations by the police and statements from family members suggest that the incident was fueled by mental health struggles and a minor dispute:

Dispute Over Park Keys: According to the victim’s daughter-in-law, Ramratan had been persistently asking the park caretaker for a “permanent key” to the premises. When the caretaker refused, he became deeply upset and began drafting a formal complaint at home.

Mental Health Concerns: The victim’s son, Sonu, revealed that his father had been struggling with mental health issues for some time. He had received treatment at a local medical college a year ago, which led to a temporary improvement in his condition.

A Sudden Impulse: Since painting work was ongoing at the park on Wednesday, the gates were left open. Ramratan took advantage of this access to enter and carry out the self-harm attempt.

Police and Medical Response

Upon receiving information, Baragaon Station In-charge Baliraj Shahi arrived at the scene with a police force. The police immediately called for an ambulance and rushed the injured man to the Medical College Hospital. The Station In-charge stated that, prima facie, the act appears to be a result of mental instability and frustration over the park keys. The knife has been recovered from the site, and a detailed investigation is underway.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, actress Lisa Ray has opened up about the profound impact of storytelling on social stigmas. Reflecting on her portrayal of Samara Kapoor in the hit series Four More Shots Please!, Ray highlighted how the character served as a vital mirror for those navigating the complexities of bipolar disorder.

Beyond the Script: A Journey of Highs and Lows

Sharing pivotal scenes from the show on social media, Lisa Ray emphasized that healing is rarely a linear process. Through Samara, the series explored the raw and often unpredictable nature of living with a mental health condition.

Key themes explored in the storyline include:

The Emotional Spectrum: Depicting the extreme “highs” and devastating “crashes” associated with bipolar disorder.

Relational Impact: Showing how impulsivity and vulnerability can create friction in professional environments and personal relationships.

The Weight of Loneliness: Illustrating the isolation that often accompanies a mind that feels out of one’s own control.

Visibility Over Perfection

For Ray, the significance of the role wasn’t about portraying a “perfect” recovery, but about visibility. She noted that seeing a successful, multi-dimensional woman openly navigate these struggles helps move the conversation beyond shame and silence—particularly in cultures where such topics are frequently ignored.

A Message of Compassion

Lisa Ray concluded her reflection with a powerful reminder: a mental health diagnosis does not define a person’s worth or their capacity to be loved. She urged her followers to prioritize:

Support Systems: Relying on therapy, medication, and professional guidance.

Gentle Self-Talk: Practicing self-compassion during difficult cycles.

Active Checking-In: Reaching out to friends and family to foster a culture of care.

Expert Analysis: The Power of Representative Media

Media experts suggest that “Samara’s” storyline was a turning point for Indian digital content. By avoiding caricatures and focusing on the “unapologetically flawed” reality of the condition, the show helped normalize psychiatric care. Lisa Ray’s advocacy continues to be a cornerstone for mental health dialogue in the South Asian entertainment industry.

Note: Mental Health Awareness Month is observed every May to increase awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding behavioral health issues. If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that seeking help is a sign of strength.
