In a recent interview with People magazine, the Only Murders in the Building star shared that Katherine, who passed away in February at the age of 42, had struggled with extreme mental health challenges, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), for many years.

“She did the best she could until she couldn’t,” Short remarked, highlighting the intensity of her struggle. He poignantly compared mental illness to physical diseases like cancer—which claimed his wife’s life in 2010—stating that both can sometimes be terminal.

Katherine’s Legacy in Social Work

Ironically, Katherine Short spent her professional life helping others navigate the same darkness she faced. As a licensed clinical social worker, she was deeply involved in:

• Community outreach and peer support.
• Psychotherapy services and family support groups at Amae Health.
• She held advanced degrees in Psychology from NYU and Social Work from USC.

The Upcoming Documentary: ‘Marty, Life Is Short’

Martin Short’s personal journey, including his resilience through loss, will be explored in the new Netflix documentary titled ‘Marty, Life Is Short’, premiering on May 12. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan, the film uses archival footage to reflect on Short’s legendary career and his private grief.

The project is dedicated to the memory of Katherine Short and the late actress Catherine O’Hara, a long-time collaborator of Short who passed away in January at the age of 71.
