In a dramatic turn of events during the ongoing Tri-Nation ‘A’ Series match in Dambulla, India ‘A’ staged a remarkable recovery to post a competitive total of 265 runs against Sri Lanka ‘A’. However, a bizarre regulatory blunder by Indian all-rounder Vipraj Nigam became the talking point of the match. Nigam repeatedly breached cricket protocols by running into the pitch’s ‘danger area’ twice during his batting stint. This rare lapse in discipline led the field umpires to penalize India ‘A’ with 10 runs, gifting Sri Lanka ‘A’ a 10-run head start before a single delivery was bowled in their chase.

Key Highlights of the Report

India ‘A’ posted a resilient 265 runs on the board after a disastrous top-order collapse.

All-rounder Vipraj Nigam breached the pitch running rule twice, dealing a severe blow to the team’s score.

Sri Lanka ‘A’ was awarded 10 free penalty runs, starting their innings automatically at 10/0.

Suryansh Shedge (72) and Vipraj Nigam (51) engineered a spectacular 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket.

Umpire Penalizes India for Pitch Damage

According to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) laws of cricket, a batsman is strictly prohibited from running down the center of the pitch—often designated as the ‘danger area’—to prevent unfair wear and tear that could aid bowlers later. If a batsman violates this after a team warning, a 5-run penalty is awarded to the fielding side.

In this fixture, Vipraj Nigam crossed the line during the 3rd ball of the 35th over and repeated the mistake on the 4th ball of the 37th over. Since he committed the infraction twice, India ‘A’ was fined 5 runs for each instance, totaling a 10-run penalty that was immediately credited to Sri Lanka’s scoreboard.

No Warning Cushion Left by Anukul Roy

Typically, a batting team receives a solitary official warning from the umpires before a run penalty is implemented. However, prior to Nigam coming out to bat, Indian batsman Anukul Roy had already been reprimanded by the officials for running on the danger zone. Having exhausted the team’s warning quota early on, India ‘A’ had no safety net left, which directly triggered the back-to-back 5-run penalties during Nigam’s stay at the crease.

Shedge and Nigam Rescue India ‘A’

Despite the penalty drama, Nigam’s contribution with the bat was pivotal to the team’s survival. India ‘A’ found themselves in deep trouble after being reduced to a precarious 143/7. Stepping up to the challenge, Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam anchored the innings with a brilliant counter-attacking display.

The duo shared a vital 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket off just 90 deliveries. Nigam played a gritty knock of 51 runs off 49 balls, decorated with 6 boundaries, before a miscommunication led to his run-out. Meanwhile, Shedge top-scored with a magnificent 72 off 66 balls, successfully steering India ‘A’ to a respectable 265.
