Hello! If you are planning to step out today, Sunday, June 07, 2026, it is essential to check the weather forecast first. India is currently experiencing two highly distinct weather patterns. While the advancing South-West Monsoon is drenching South and Northeast India with heavy rainfall, people in North and Northwest India are battling severe heatwaves and high humidity.

According to the latest updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is now fully active over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and the Northeastern states. Let’s take a detailed look at the weather forecast for major cities and regions across the country.

🏙️ Weather in Major Cities Today (Estimated Temperatures & Conditions)

The table below provides a quick overview of the temperatures and weather conditions in key cities across the country:

City/Region

Max Temp

Min Temp

Weather Condition

Alerts / Suggestions

Delhi-NCR

40-43°C

28-31°C

Severe heat, humid, light squalls possible

Heatwave alert, stay hydrated

Mumbai

31-34°C

26-28°C

Active monsoon, moderate to heavy rain

Carry an umbrella/raincoat

Chennai

34-37°C

27-29°C

Heavy rain, thunderstorms

Waterlogging/flood-like situation possible

Kolkata

33-36°C

27-29°C

Rain with thunderstorms

Avoid humidity

Bengaluru

26-29°C

20-22°C

Intense monsoon showers

Weather will remain cool

Hyderabad

32-35°C

24-26°C

Moderate rain likely

Stay alert outdoors

Jaipur

40-43°C

28-30°C

Severe heat and dry weather

Protect against heatstroke (Loo)

Lucknow

38-42°C

28-30°C

High humidity, sporadic storms/rain

Avoid direct sunlight

Ahmedabad

38-41°C

28-30°C

Hot and sticky weather

Avoid direct sun exposure

Guwahati (Northeast)

30-34°C

24-26°C

Heavy to very heavy rainfall

Landslide risk in hilly areas

🗺️ Regional Weather Summary

Here is how the weather will impact different parts of the country today:

North India (Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP): Severe heatwave conditions will continue unabated in these states. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. Pre-monsoon dust storms and isolated drizzles may occur in some places, but this will ultimately just increase the humidity levels.

South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh): The monsoon is at its peak here. Warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall (up to 10 to 20 centimeters) have been issued for parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Rains in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad will provide significant relief from the summer heat.

West India (Maharashtra, Gujarat): With the monsoon advancing, moderate to heavy rains continue in coastal Maharashtra and Mumbai. Meanwhile, scorching heat and dry conditions will still dominate Gujarat and adjoining parts of Rajasthan.

East India (Kolkata, Odisha, Bihar): Amidst humid heat, sudden thunderstorms, rainfall, and gusty winds are highly likely across these states.

Northeast India: A heavy rain and thunderstorm alert is in place for Assam, Meghalaya, and neighboring states. Travelers and residents in hilly regions are advised to take special precautions against potential landslides.

💡 Important Health and Safety Tips for the Public

Protection from Heat: Residents of North and West India should avoid stepping out unnecessarily between 12 PM and 4 PM. Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes and prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of water and cooling fluids.

Protection from Rain: In areas with heavy rain alerts, carrying an umbrella or raincoat is mandatory when leaving the house. Low-lying areas may experience rapid waterlogging, so stick to safe, elevated routes.

For Farmers and Travelers: Before embarking on a long journey or starting major agricultural activities, always check the live updates for your specific area on the official IMD website or a reliable weather application.

According to the latest forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), India is experiencing highly diverse weather patterns today, May 16, 2026. This year, several parts of the country are recording above-average rainfall for the month of May, bringing much-needed relief from the intense summer heat. However, plains across Northwest and Central India continue to face scorching temperatures and ongoing heatwave conditions, while pre-monsoon activities remain fully active across South and East India.

Regional Weather and Temperature Breakdown

Due to geographical variations, the weather conditions and maximum temperatures across major regions and metropolitan cities today are as follows:

Delhi-NCR and North India: The capital and its surrounding regions will experience primarily clear skies, with partial cloud cover developing by afternoon or evening. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 40°C and 44°C. While isolated pockets might see light drizzle accompanied by strong gusty winds, heatwave conditions will persist.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Northwest India: This region is currently bearing the brunt of the peak summer heat. Mercury levels in several districts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are projected to hit between 44°C and 47°C. The weather department has issued severe heatwave alerts for these zones, advising citizens to take necessary precautions.

Mumbai and West India (Maharashtra & Gujarat): Coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, along with Gujarat, continues to experience hot and highly humid weather. Daytime temperatures are likely to range from 35°C to 38°C. Parts of the Konkan region may witness light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Bengaluru and Karnataka: Southern Karnataka and Bengaluru are enjoying remarkably pleasant weather. The maximum daytime temperature is staying between 28°C and 32°C, which is significantly lower than typical seasonal averages. Light to moderate evening showers are highly anticipated.

Chennai and South India (Kerala & Tamil Nadu): Driven by active pre-monsoon systems, widespread areas of Kerala and interior Tamil Nadu are receiving moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Chennai will remain mostly cloudy today with scattered light showers, maintaining temperatures between 32°C and 37°C.

Kolkata and East/Northeast India: Thunderstorm, lightning, and squall warnings have been issued across West Bengal, Bihar, and the northeastern states. Temperatures in Kolkata are expected to range from 34°C to 38°C amid cloudy conditions.

What is Driving This Weather Variation?

An analysis of the IMD’s monthly outlook indicates that moisture-laden winds traveling from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are triggering early pre-monsoon systems across Southern and Eastern India. Conversely, the continuous influx of dry, continental westerly winds is sustaining high thermal pressure and heatwave conditions over the northern and western plains.

Essential Health and Safety Guidelines

For Heat-Affected Zones: Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Stay well-hydrated by drinking ample water and wear light-colored, breathable cotton clothing.

For Rain-Affected Zones: Seek shelter in stable, permanent structures during periods of heavy lightning and strong winds. Avoid standing near weak trees or temporary hoardings.

For Farmers: Given the unpredictable weather shifts, secure harvested crops in covered spaces and schedule irrigation fields strictly based on localized, short-term updates.

Disclaimer: This weather report is compiled from official data issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other global meteorological platforms available as of May 16, 2026. Weather is a dynamic natural phenomenon, and sudden localized variations are common. Please consult your local meteorological center for real-time live updates before planning travel or agricultural activities.

The month of May is traditionally synonymous with scorching heatwaves and a relentless sun. However, May 2026 is set to break the mold. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its latest monthly outlook, revealing a startling shift: most of the country is expected to experience significantly higher rainfall and a noticeable dip in temperatures.

The IMD Forecast: Key Statistical Insights

During a press briefing, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the IMD, stated that the average rainfall across India in May 2026 is likely to exceed 110% of the Long Period Average (LPA).

Temperature Drop: Maximum day temperatures in Northern, Central, and Southern India are expected to remain 2°C to 6°C below normal.

Night Conditions: While days will be cooler, high humidity levels might make nights feel slightly warmer than usual in certain coastal and eastern regions.

Regional Impact: Which States Will Be Affected Most?

The weather office has categorized the impact based on geographical zones:

Central & Western India: States like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat are likely to witness frequent thunderstorms. Parts of Rajasthan, usually prone to dust storms, will see more rain this year.

South India: A Yellow Alert has been issued for Kerala and Karnataka, where pre-monsoon activity will be most intense. Heavy spells are also expected in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

North India: Residents of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana can expect significant relief from heatwaves. Intermittent rain showers will keep the climate pleasant throughout the month.

East India: Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal are likely to see increased ‘Kal Baisakhi’ (Nor’westers) activity, bringing sudden squalls and rain.

Why is the Weather Behaving Differently?

According to meteorologists, the resurgence of La Niña conditions in the Pacific Ocean is a primary factor. La Niña is typically associated with better rainfall in the Indian subcontinent. Additionally, the frequent formation of low-pressure areas in the Bay of Bengal is pushing moisture deep into the mainland, creating monsoon-like conditions weeks in advance.

Essential Guidelines for Farmers and the Public

Given the sudden shift in weather patterns, authorities have issued the following advisories:

For Farmers: Protect harvested crops and grains stored in open fields. In areas prone to hailstorms, ensure crop insurance and protective measures are in place.

Health Precautions: Do not let the cooler temperatures lead to a drop in water intake. Sudden weather changes often trigger viral infections; stay hydrated and consult a doctor if symptoms of a cold or flu appear.

Travelers: Tourists planning trips to hill stations in Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand must check real-time weather updates due to the risk of landslides and sudden heavy downpours.

Disclaimer

This report is based on the official monthly forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for May 2026. Meteorology is an evolving science, and local conditions may vary. For precise, real-time updates, please refer to the official IMD website or the ‘Mausam’ mobile application.

Weather Update: India is set to experience sharply contrasting weather conditions on April 27, 2026. While northwestern and central parts of the country will face intense heat and heatwave conditions, eastern and northeastern regions are likely to witness thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. Weather systems such as a western disturbance and cyclonic circulations are influencing cloud formation in eastern India, while a trough is bringing rainfall activity to parts of southern India.

Severe Heatwave Across North and Northwest India

Regions including Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to record extremely high temperatures ranging between 42°C and 45°C. Heatwave warnings have been issued, and conditions may become particularly harsh during the afternoon hours.

People are advised to avoid direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing. Some temporary relief may occur by evening due to cloud cover associated with a western disturbance.

Between April 27 and April 30, light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorms may occur in parts of Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Isolated rainfall is also expected in Madhya Pradesh (April 27–29) and Vidarbha (April 28–29), accompanied by gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms in Northeast and East India

States such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on April 27. Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds up to 50 km/h are expected across the region.

Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may also receive intense showers along with thunderstorm activity. Meanwhile, eastern states including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha are forecast to experience scattered rainfall and thunderstorms between April 26 and April 30.

Cities like Kolkata and Patna may see maximum temperatures around 36–38°C, with cloudy skies and humid conditions adding to discomfort.

Mixed Weather in Central India

Central India, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, will see a mix of hot days and possible evening relief in the form of cloud cover or light rain. Bhopal may record temperatures close to 42°C, while cities like Jabalpur and Sagar could experience slight cooling later in the day.

Southern India to See Isolated Showers

Southern states will generally have more balanced weather. Kerala may receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms due to the presence of a trough.

Karnataka and Telangana could see scattered showers between April 28 and 29. Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh are expected to remain mostly dry with partial cloud cover. Chennai is likely to record a maximum temperature of around 34°C, with humid conditions during evenings and nights.

Changing Conditions in Himalayan Regions

The western Himalayan region, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, will remain partly cloudy. Higher altitudes may witness light snowfall or hail.

Uttarakhand could experience moderate rainfall between April 27 and 28. Dehradun may see temperatures around 35°C, while hill areas will experience gusty winds.

Safety Advisory

Avoid going out during peak afternoon hours

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

Wear loose, light-colored clothing

Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning

Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal

Conclusion

April 27, 2026, will bring diverse and extreme weather conditions across India. While northern regions battle intense heatwaves, eastern and northeastern areas will deal with heavy rainfall and storms. Staying informed and following official weather advisories will be crucial for safety.
