The Southwest Monsoon is advancing rapidly across various parts of the country, triggering significant shifts in weather patterns. According to the latest updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Skymet, the monsoon is expected to actively cover parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar in the coming days. While a severe heavy rainfall alert has been issued for the Northeastern states and the Western coast, North Indian states, including Delhi-NCR, can expect marginal relief from the scorching heatwave due to anticipated dust storms and scattered light showers.

Key Highlights of Today’s Weather:

Severe heavy rainfall warning remains active for Maharashtra, Konkan-Goa, and the Northeastern states.

Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana are likely to experience dust storms and light drizzles, with maximum temperatures hovering between 40°C and 45°C.

Strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph are predicted across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh.

Despite the current active phase, overall rainfall for the month of June is projected to remain below normal nationwide.

North and Himalayan India: Heat Meets Dust Storms

Severe heat continues to grip the capital city of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, and most parts of Rajasthan, where maximum temperatures remain locked between 40°C and 45°C. However, meteorological experts predict temporary relief as dust storms and light to moderate drizzles are likely to sweep across these plains by the evening. Meanwhile, the hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will experience a pleasant climate, with high-altitude areas bracing for heavy rainfall.

East and Northeast India: Torrential Rain Alerts

Monsoon clouds are set to unleash heavy downpours across the Eastern and Northeastern belts. A red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura. The weather in Bihar and Jharkhand will be highly volatile; while these states will witness thunderstorms and high-speed winds (50-60 kmph), isolated pockets may still endure heatwave conditions. Odisha is also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Central and West India: Heavy Downpours in Mumbai

Maharashtra is currently the epicenter of monsoon activity. Moderate to extremely heavy rainfall is forecasted for Mumbai, Konkan-Goa, Vidarbha, and Marathwada. Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will also see a shift in weather, with thundersqualls and lightning strikes expected in several districts. On the western front, the monsoon is steadily strengthening its grip over Gujarat, bringing light to moderate showers, while Eastern Rajasthan will witness only scattered, sporadic rain.

South India: Active Monsoon Over Coastal Belts

The monsoon remains highly active over the Southern Peninsula. Coastal Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are on high alert for heavy rainfall, and consistent showers will continue to wash over Kerala. Conversely, Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka are expected to receive only light to moderate, breezy showers.

IMD Advisory and Precautions In light of the heavy rainfall and high-speed wind alerts, the IMD has urged residents of low-lying and coastal areas to remain vigilant against potential waterlogging and flash floods. Farmers are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their standing crops and ensure proper field drainage. For safe travel planning and real-time alerts, citizens should rely exclusively on the official IMD website or mobile applications.

South India: Monsoon preparations are underway in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, with a potential onset scheduled between May 14-16. Humid conditions remain the dominant feature for Kerala and Karnataka.

West India: Gujarat and Rajasthan remain the “heat zones” of the country, with temperatures consistently crossing the 40°C mark.

Critical Factors Influencing Today’s Weather

Above-Average Precipitation: May 2026 has shown a trend of higher-than-normal rainfall, which is disrupting the typical dry summer cycle.

Monsoon Arrival: The early signs of the South-West Monsoon are being monitored near the Andaman Sea, signaling the start of the seasonal transition.

Active Western Disturbance: This system is the primary driver behind the sudden wind speed increases and cooling rain in the northern plains.
