MEXICO CITY — In what will be remembered as one of the most defining away victories in their footballing history, England edged past host nation Mexico with a 3-2 win to secure their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.

Overcoming a harsh 7,300-foot altitude, a pre-match lightning storm that delayed kickoff by an hour, and a hostile crowd of over 80,000 passionate El Tri supporters, Thomas Tuchel’s men delivered a masterclass in resilience at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

The Bellingham Blitz

Mexico entered the match having kept clean sheets throughout the tournament, but their defensive wall finally crumbled midway through the first half.

Following a pair of brilliant early saves by Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to deny Raúl Jiménez, England found their rhythm. Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham stunned the home crowd by scoring two brilliant goals in the span of just 98 seconds.

36th Minute: Declan Rice sparked a fluid attacking move, feeding Bukayo Saka on the right wing. Saka’s pinpoint cross found Bellingham, who headed it home at the far post.

38th Minute: Before Mexico could recover, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane linked up beautifully to set up Bellingham for his second goal of the night, mirroring the historic dominance of Diego Maradona on this very same pitch 40 years prior.

Mexico refused to surrender quietly. Julián Quiñones breathed life back into the stadium by halving the deficit in the 42nd minute, sending the Azteca into a frenzy as the teams headed into halftime.

Red Card Chaos and Penalty Drama

The second half introduced a wave of adversity for the Three Lions. In the 54th minute, England defender Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review for a high challenge on Jesús Gallardo.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, England extended their lead just six minutes later. Anthony Gordon drew a foul in the box from Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, and captain Harry Kane stepped up to confidently convert the penalty. The strike marked Kane’s 14th career World Cup goal, tying him with German legend Gerd Müller.

However, Kane’s night took a bizarre historical twist shortly after. By fouling substitute Brian Gutiérrez in his own box, Kane became the first player on record since 1966 to both score and concede a penalty in the same World Cup match. Jiménez converted the resulting spot-kick with a slick stutter-step, setting up a nerve-wracking finale.

A Historic Defensive Stand

Facing 21 minutes of regular time and a grueling 11 minutes of stoppage time with a man down, England shifted into a heavily fortified back-five. Veteran John Stones and Dan Burn anchored the defense, while Pickford’s commanding presence in the air neutralized Mexico’s relentless crossing attempts.

Ultimately, the English backline held firm.

England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his squad’s gritty performance: “To play 40 to 50 minutes with 10 men in this altitude is almost impossible. We found a way to win with pure mentality and heart.”

For Mexico and manager Javier Aguirre, it was a familiar heartbreak. Despite immense home support and a fighting spirit, El Tri once again failed to reach the World Cup quarterfinals—a hurdle they haven’t cleared since hosting the tournament in 1986.

What’s Next?

The victory came at a slight cost for England. During the post-match celebrations, midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a wrist injury after tumbling over an advertising board and had to be taken to a local hospital. Furthermore, Quansah will face suspension for the next round, adding to Tuchel’s ongoing dilemma at the right-back position.

England will now travel to Miami Gardens, Florida, where they will face Norway on Saturday with a coveted spot in the World Cup semifinals on the line.
