The Rajdhani Express (train number 20507) traveling from Dibrugarh (Sairang) to New Delhi collided with a herd of elephants. The impact was so severe that five coaches, including the engine, derailed. Fortunately, all passengers on board are safe and no one was seriously injured.

How did the accident happen?

The incident occurred in the Lumding railway division, about 126 kilometers from Guwahati. According to local sources, a herd of eight elephants suddenly appeared on the tracks. The loco pilot applied emergency brakes upon seeing the elephants, but the train’s high speed prevented the accident.

Forest department officials have confirmed that eight elephants died on the spot in this tragic accident. The scene was horrific, with their bodies and body parts scattered on the tracks. A baby elephant in this herd has been seriously injured and is currently undergoing treatment.
