In Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh, serious questions are being raised over the anti-encroachment drive launched by the administration and municipality at the city’s heart, ‘Ghantaghar’, on Friday. Allegations suggest that the joint team of traffic police and civic officials selectively targeted poor street vendors and cart pullers, completely turning a blind eye to the permanent illegal encroachments by wealthy and influential businessmen. This blatant double standard has sparked massive outrage among the local residents.

Key Highlights of the Report:

Anti-encroachment drive conducted by the municipality and traffic police at Damoh’s Ghantaghar area.

Livelihoods of poor Kumbhkar (Prajapati) families, selling earthen pots for generations, face a severe crisis.

Influential merchants allegedly received prior tip-offs, successfully saving their goods.

Citizens demand transparent, unbiased, and uniform action against all encroachers.

Poor Bear the Brunt, Livelihoods Snatched

The heaviest toll of this discriminatory action was borne by the Kumbhkar (Prajapati) community. These families have been earning their daily bread by selling earthen pots on the roadside for generations. Without any solid prior notice, the administration dismantled their carts and destroyed their goods. This sudden crackdown has created a severe livelihood crisis for these daily wage earners. It has become a common talking point in the city whether the whip of the law is reserved only for the weak and marginalized.

Administration Silent on Encroachments by Large Establishments

Questioning the administration’s impartiality, local citizens pointed out that several prominent shopkeepers in and around the Ghantaghar area have permanently occupied public corridors and pathways. Illegal tin sheds and concrete structures have been erected in multiple spots, yet the administration’s bulldozers failed to muster the courage to reach those areas.

Eyewitnesses allege that wealthy and influential traders were tipped off about the drive well in advance. Capitalizing on this, they secured their valuable goods in time. Although a cosmetic shift in the officials’ attitude was noticed once media coverage began at the spot, the poor vendors had already suffered massive financial losses by then.

Growing Demand for Transparent Action

Following this entire episode, city residents have strongly demanded from the district administration that double standards should not be adopted in anti-encroachment operations. The public asserts that everyone is equal before the law, and therefore, the action must be completely transparent. Instead of solely targeting the city’s poorest, the bulldozers should also dismantle the concrete encroachments built by the influential on public properties.

Panic gripped the village of Futera Kala in the Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday morning when a 25-year-old man climbed a 150-foot high-tension power tower. The high-voltage drama lasted for hours before local authorities and a state minister intervened to bring him down safely.

Bizarre Demands and a ‘Second’ Attempt

The man, identified as Ganesh Patel, climbed the tower and refused to descend unless two specific conditions were met:

That his marriage be arranged immediately.

That he be given ₹50,000 in cash.

According to his family, Ganesh is mentally unstable, and this was not his first attempt. Just three days prior, he had climbed the same tower but was persuaded to come down by family and fellow villagers.

Administrative Tact and Ministerial Assurance

Given the extreme risk of electrocution, police and administrative teams rushed to the scene. The situation reached a breakthrough when the young man insisted on speaking with Minister Lakhan Patel.

The Intervention: Officials facilitated a phone call between the Minister and the youth. Minister Lakhan Patel spoke with him patiently, offering assurances and urging him to climb down for his own safety.

The Resolution: Following the Minister’s personal assurance and hours of effort by the rescue team, Ganesh calmed down and was brought back to the ground safely, ending the standoff.

Expert Analysis: Mental Health and Infrastructure Safety

This incident highlights a critical need for professional mental health counseling rather than just temporary persuasion in such cases. Experts also suggest that high-tension towers in sensitive areas require stricter security measures or fencing to prevent unauthorized access and protect public safety.

Safety Note: Approaching high-tension lines or power towers is life-threatening. In case of a mental health crisis or emergency, please contact the national helpline or local authorities immediately.

Damoh, Madhya Pradesh: In a major crackdown on corruption in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district, the Sagar Lokayukta police caught a Gram Panchayat secretary red-handed while accepting a bribe. The official allegedly demanded money in exchange for releasing an installment of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The Sting Operation: Caught with ₹6,000

On Monday, acting on a meticulously planned strategy, the Lokayukta team raided the Tejgarh Panchayat building. As soon as the victim handed over ₹6,000 to the Panchayat Secretary, Jugraj Singh Lodhi, the team moved in. In a desperate attempt to evade arrest, the secretary immediately passed the cash to the village watchman (Chaukidar), Gudda Raikwar. Consequently, the watchman has also been named as a co-accused in the case.

To solidify the evidence, a chemical test was conducted. When the hands of both suspects were washed in a specialized solution, the water turned red, providing scientific confirmation that they had handled the bribe money.

The Grievance: Installments Held Hostage

The complainant, Mahendra Kosti, a resident of Tejgarh, approached the Lokayukta after facing persistent harassment. According to Kosti, a house worth ₹1.20 lakh had been sanctioned under PMAY in his wife’s name. However, Secretary Jugraj Singh allegedly demanded an illegal gratification of ₹15,000 to release the second installment.

The victim revealed that:

His rightful payment was withheld because he refused to pay the bribe.

After several negotiations, the amount was “settled” at ₹6,000.

Unable to bear the extortion, Kosti filed a written complaint with the Sagar Lokayukta SP office on April 16.

Legal Action Under Anti-Corruption Laws

The operation was led by Lokayukta Inspector Manju Kiran Tirkey, along with Inspector Ranjit Singh and a team of several head constables. Following the successful trap, a case was registered against both accused individuals under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the administrative circles of the Tendukheda block. Local residents have hailed the action, describing it as a necessary step toward ensuring transparency in government welfare schemes.

Disclaimer: This article is based on news inputs and official reports from the Lokayukta police. The accused are currently under investigation. Under the law, every individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Damoh: A resident of Barbatta village under the Tejgarh police station area in Damoh district has sought police protection to ensure that his wedding ceremony is conducted peacefully. The groom, Suraj Ahirwar, is set to get married on April 30, 2026.

In an application submitted to the Superintendent of Police, the groom stated that his village is socially backward, where certain orthodox practices are still followed. He alleged that some influential individuals in the village are trying to prevent him from riding a horse during the wedding procession and performing traditional rituals at a temple.

The application further mentions that such interference could lead to disputes and there is a possibility of an untoward incident. The groom and his family have expressed serious concerns regarding their safety.

He has requested the police administration to deploy adequate security personnel around 11 AM on the wedding day during the procession, so that the ceremony can take place smoothly without any disruption or conflict.

This incident has once again raised concerns about social harmony and law and order in the region. All eyes are now on the administration to see how it responds to this sensitive situation and ensures a peaceful wedding ceremony.

Damoh: The newly appointed District Collector Pratap Narayan Yadav has emphasized making the administrative system more effective, accountable, and citizen-centric. During the public grievance hearing (Jan Sunwai), he clearly instructed that people should not have to visit the district headquarters for minor issues.

He stated that only those cases should be brought to the district level which cannot be resolved at the local level—such as Gram Panchayat, Tehsil, or Subdivision. This approach will not only reduce unnecessary crowding at the district office but also make governance more efficient.

The Collector stressed that a sensitive and responsive administration is key to gaining public trust. If people do not believe that their problems will be solved, they will hesitate to approach the administration.

During the hearing, it was observed that many issues reaching the district office could have been resolved at the local level itself. Expressing concern over this, the Collector instructed officials to ensure accountability at every level and resolve complaints within a fixed time frame.

He also directed the revenue department and urban local bodies to organize camps in their respective areas to address issues on the spot. These camps will include patwaris, पंचायत officials, and other departmental staff to ensure quick and effective resolution of most complaints.

The Collector further informed that a TL (Time Limit) meeting will soon be conducted to provide necessary guidelines to officials. He also appealed to citizens to first present their grievances at the appropriate local level. Only if the issue remains unresolved should they approach the district office.

Giving examples, he mentioned that problems like encroachment on drains and sanitation issues can easily be resolved locally. It is not appropriate to make citizens travel to the district headquarters for such minor concerns.

The primary objective of the administration is to ensure quick and fair resolution of public grievances so that citizens remain satisfied and maintain trust in the system. Considering the summer heat, arrangements for drinking water and buttermilk were also made for visitors during the public hearing at the Collector’s office.
