In a thrilling development for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans, legendary filmmaker Kenneth Branagh has hinted at a potential return to the Thor franchise. More than a decade after directing the original 2011 film that introduced Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, Branagh revealed he has a vision for a “glorious twilight” ending for the character.

A “Glorious Twilight” Inspired by ‘Logan’

During a recent interview with Variety, Branagh shared that he has long harbored ideas for revisiting the saga. His vision, however, leans toward a more grounded and emotional finale, drawing comparisons to James Mangold’s masterpiece, Logan.

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant Logan,” Branagh stated.

He expressed a desire to see Chris Hemsworth and the rest of the cast receive a definitive, individual final story that brings the epic journey of Thor to a beautiful, dignified sunset.

The Intensity of Marvel Productions

Despite the success of the first film, Branagh opted not to return for the sequels, which were subsequently helmed by Alan Taylor (The Dark World) and Taika Waititi (Ragnarok, Love and Thunder). Explaining his departure, Branagh noted the sheer scale of working within the MCU.

“Marvel shoots are intense. Marvel post-production is more intense—wildly exciting, but super intense,” he admitted. He shared that at the time, he simply “needed to smell the roses” and take a break, a decision that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and the cast supported.

The Future of Thor in the MCU

While Branagh is open to a comeback, he remains realistic about the current state of Marvel’s massive roadmap. He acknowledged that the studio likely has its future phases already set in stone.

“They are so far deep into the future of the Marvel Universe that I’m sure whatever plans they have for it are already kind of set,” he noted. However, he maintained that there is something profoundly beautiful about reaching a thoughtful conclusion for an arc that has spanned over 15 years.

Conclusion

Following the polarized reception of Thor: Love and Thunder, many fans have been calling for a return to the franchise’s more Shakespearean and serious roots. Kenneth Branagh’s return could provide the perfect tonal shift to conclude Thor’s legendary story with the gravitas it deserves.

Disclaimer: This report is based on an interview given by Kenneth Branagh to Variety. As of now, Marvel Studios has not officially announced a director or a release date for a fifth Thor film.
