The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class 12 board exam results on May 13, 2026. This year’s results highlight a shift toward academic rigor and new evaluation benchmarks. According to official data, the overall pass percentage stands at 85.20%, marking a 3.19% decline compared to last year’s 88.39%. For Science stream students, Physics emerged as the most formidable subject of the season.

CBSE 12th Result 2026: Key Statistics at a Glance

The performance of the millions of students who appeared for the exam is summarized below:

Total Registered Students: 1,780,365

Total Appeared: 1,768,968

Total Passed: 1,507,109

Scored 95% and Above: 17,113 students

Scored 90% and Above: 94,028 students

Gender-wise and Region-wise Performance: Girls have once again outperformed boys with a pass percentage of 88.86%, compared to 82.13% for boys. In terms of regional performance, Trivandrum topped the charts across India with a pass percentage of 95.62%.

Physics Paper Analysis: Why Was It Difficult?

Educationists and teachers have noted that this year’s Physics paper was predominantly “application-based.” Students faced deep conceptual and derivation-based questions rather than straightforward numerical problems.

Major Reasons for the Score Decline:

Challenging Question Paper: Certain sets of the Physics and Mathematics papers were significantly more complex than in previous years.

On-Screen Marking (OSM): The Board implemented a fully digital evaluation system for the first time, leading to higher precision and stricter checking of answer scripts.

Focus on Competency: The shift away from rote learning meant students had to demonstrate a thorough understanding of core concepts to score well.

Science Stream High Achievers

While the Board does not release an official merit list, reports from various coaching institutes suggest that Naitik and Jashandeep Kaur are among the top performers in the PCM/PCB groups with 98.4%. Other high scorers, such as Pragya Jain and Saurasis Mondal, achieved near 99%, setting a strong foundation for engineering and medical entrance exams (JEE/NEET).

The ‘Compartment’ Option for Students

Students whose results did not meet expectations or who failed to clear subjects like Physics should not lose heart. CBSE will conduct the Compartment (Supplementary) Examinations in June-July 2026. Experts advise students to focus deeply on NCERT textbooks and practice previous years’ question papers to bridge the gaps in their understanding.
