New Delhi. Legendary Indian film actor Mohanlal will be awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2023. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting formally announced the award, stating that the decision was made on the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee.

Mohanlal is being honored with this award for his decades-long cinematic journey and remarkable contribution to Indian cinema. He has left a deep mark not only in Malayalam films but also in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi cinema. The diversity of his roles and the depth of his acting have placed him among India’s most respected actors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Mohanlal on social media. He said, “Mohanlal ji is a symbol of excellence and versatility. His decades of work have not only enriched Malayalam cinema, but his contributions to Indian theatre and films in other languages have also been inspiring.”

The award will be presented to him during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025. Last year, this honor was bestowed upon veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty.

Mohanlal was born on May 21, 1960, in Alanthur, Kerala. He began his career with the 1978 film “Thiranottam,” though he gained real recognition with the 1980 film “Manjil Virinja Pookkal.” To date, he has appeared in over 350 films, portraying a wide range of roles—whether serious, comedic, or action.

Mohanlal has received several National Film Awards for his outstanding acting. Furthermore, the Government of India has honored him with the highest civilian honors, including the Padma Shri (2001) and the Padma Bhushan (2019).
