New Delhi/Jaipur | State Bureau

In a significant move toward administrative austerity, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma announced a series of special directives on Wednesday aimed at fuel conservation and the efficient use of state resources. Following an appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding national interest and sustainability, the Chief Minister has implemented these changes starting with his own official entourage.

Reduction in Convoy Fleet

Speaking to the media in New Delhi, the Chief Minister emphasized that “fuel conservation in the national interest” should be a collective responsibility rather than just a slogan. He announced the following measures:

Leading by Example: The number of vehicles in the Chief Minister’s own convoy has been reduced with immediate effect.

Directives for Public Representatives: All state ministers, MLAs, and other public representatives have been urged to limit the number of vehicles in their respective convoys.

Curbing Unnecessary Usage: Government officials have been strictly instructed to ensure that state vehicles are utilized only for essential official duties.

Streamlining Government Programs

To further control fuel consumption, the Chief Minister suggested a strategic reduction in the frequency of physical events and official programs. He advised that meetings and events should be consolidated or optimized to prevent the unnecessary expenditure of petrol and diesel.

Expert Analysis: Governance through Austerity

Political analysts view this decision as a strategic effort by the Rajasthan government to diminish ‘VVIP culture’ and promote a message of ‘simplicity’ among the public. Beyond the immediate financial savings for the state exchequer, this move serves as an administrative benchmark for reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental consciousness.

Key Takeaways:

New guidelines issued for fuel conservation across Rajasthan.

Chief Minister voluntarily reduces the size of his official convoy.

Officials directed to exercise maximum austerity in vehicle usage.

Air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) continues to be one of the biggest environmental concerns, impacting millions of residents daily. To address this long-standing issue, enforcement authorities have launched a large-scale crackdown across the region. In a recent action plan, officials inspected 175 pollution-prone locations, focusing on construction sites, industrial units, road-dust zones, and diesel generator (DG) operations. This intensified enforcement drive reflects the government’s renewed commitment to improving air quality and reducing hazardous emissions.

The inspection campaign was conducted over nearly two weeks, during which flying squad teams visited multiple hotspots known for violating environmental standards. These teams concentrated primarily on activities that generate high levels of PM2.5 and PM10—fine particulate matter responsible for respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. Construction and demolition sites are among the biggest contributors to dust pollution, while diesel generator sets often emit harmful fumes when operated without adequate emission controls.

A notable outcome of the operation was the identification of numerous violations. Ten industrial units were ordered to shut down due to non-compliance with pollution norms. Additionally, 27 diesel generator sets were sealed after authorities found that their emissions far exceeded permissible limits. Another eight units were issued show-cause notices, requiring them to justify their violations and implement corrective measures. One industrial unit was also marked for environmental compensation due to the severity of its non-compliance.

Certain regions within NCR, particularly Meerut and Faridabad, displayed a high number of violations. Authorities found a total of 140 rule breaches in these areas alone, indicating the pressing need for stricter oversight and more frequent checks. Such findings show how localized pollution sources, if left uncontrolled, can significantly worsen air quality across the entire region.

The inspection drive also reviewed compliance data from earlier operations. Out of more than 26,000 units inspected in previous cycles, approximately 1,755 units had been shut down at various times for failing to follow environmental guidelines. Many of them, after making the required improvements, were later allowed to resume operations. Around 1,330 units successfully complied with standards and were granted permission to operate again, demonstrating that enforcement pressure often leads to positive environmental changes.

Environmental experts have welcomed the heightened enforcement efforts, stating that such measures are essential to achieving long-term air quality improvement. With pollution levels in Delhi and NCR frequently crossing dangerous limits, the health impact on residents—especially children and the elderly—has been alarming. Strict action against polluting industries, unregulated construction, and illegal DG set usage is seen as a crucial step toward safeguarding public health.

Public awareness is also being emphasized as a complementary approach. Authorities are encouraging residents, businesses, and builders to adopt eco-friendly practices, reduce reliance on diesel generators, and follow construction dust-control rules. As these efforts continue, the strengthened enforcement regime is expected to bring measurable improvements to the region’s air quality.

UNI Office New Delhi: In a dramatic and unexpected development in independent India’s media landscape, the office of United News of India (UNI) was forcibly vacated late Friday evening. The premises, located at 9 Rafi Marg, had been the agency’s operational base for several decades.

Officials Enter Premises with Heavy Force

According to accounts from those present, a large team comprising government officials, around 300 personnel from the Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, along with some lawyers, entered the premises without prior notice. Employees were immediately asked to vacate the newsroom and leave the building.

Warnings of Forceful Action

Staff members said they were told that if they did not leave voluntarily, force would be used. Despite requests from employees for more time and appeals to wait for senior management to arrive, officials reportedly insisted on immediate evacuation.

Allegations of Rough Handling

Employees alleged that some staff, including women, were forcibly removed from their seats, dragged out, and pushed during the process. There were also claims of verbal abuse during the eviction.

Restricted Entry and Locked Premises

The police reportedly took control of the main gate, preventing journalists who were out on assignment and senior management from entering the building. As a result, many were unable to retrieve their personal belongings.

Questions Over Lack of Notice

Concerns have been raised over the manner in which the operation was carried out, particularly the absence of prior notice and the eviction being conducted without the presence of senior management.

Services Disrupted, Uncertainty Ahead

Following the sudden evacuation, UNI’s English, Hindi, and Urdu news services were halted, affecting more than 500 subscribers. The development has cast uncertainty over the future of the historic news agency, as well as the livelihoods of hundreds of employees and their families.
